College Football Recruiting 2012: 5 Teams Most Likely To Have the No. 1 Class
With an eye on next February, we all are wondering, speculating and even fiercely debating who will end up with the No. 1 class for the 2012 recruiting cycle. While we still have a lot of time left and a ton of big name prospects yet to decide, things are slowly starting to shape up.
For this read, I'm going to give you five teams I think have a solid chance at ending up with the No. 1 class. The formula I used for this was simple, as I took a team's current class and weighted it with the realistic chances of landing more elite prospects that could boost their rankings.
Here's the prime five I came up with.
5. Florida
1 of 5Will Muschamp is off to an excellent start in his first full cycle in Gainesville. He has two five-star commits in Brian Poole and Jessamen Dunker, and could even steal Dante Fowler from rival Florida State.
According to ESPNU, Florida has six commits inside the ESPNU 150. Toss in the fact that D.J. Humphries loves the Gators, they're in the Jordan Jenkins sweepstakes and are on Nelson Agholor's main radar, and UF could be high in the rankings come NSD.
4. Auburn
2 of 5Auburn has serious quality to their class right now. They have 12 commits, and 10 of them are four-star or higher recruits. Geez.
The Tigers have a five-star QB in Zeke Pike, plus players like T.J. Yeldon, Ricardo Louis, Ricky Parks and Josh Holsey are just the tip of the iceberg.
Auburn's rise could depend on if they can land players like Kwon Alexander, Stefon Diggs, Josh Harvey-Clemons, Justin Shanks and Geno Smith.
3. Florida State
3 of 5Jimbo Fisher and the FSU staff have been recruiting like the FSU of old the past few years. From landing elite recruits to going down to the wire for others, Fisher seems to aim big and hit big.
This year is the same, as he already has a commitment from five-star DE Mario Edwards, who is a consensus top-five overall player. Other elite talents in the fold include Mario Pender, P.J. Williams, Marvin Bracy and Chris Casher, among others.
The Noles have solid chances to land Jameis Winston, Zach Banner, Chris Black and a couple other big-time talents.
2. Alabama
4 of 5Ho-hum, another recruiting cycle for Alabama. The Tide are cleaning up once again, and they figure to be in the mix strongly for the No. 1 class honors next February.
With top talents like Reggie Ragland and Eddie Williams leading a class that has Tyler Hayes, Kenyon Drake, Dakota Ball and Dillon Lee (among others) in it, then you see why.
But 'Bama is also on elite players like Jameis Winston, Dorial Green-Beckham, Kwon Alexander, Chris Black and Landon Collins. Another No. 1 class could be in store in Tuscaloosa.
1. Texas
5 of 5The Texas class is just sick. They have 18 commits, and 14 of them are four-star or higher rated players. ESPNU has nine of the Longhorn pledges inside their ESPNU 150. Whoa.
Usually what happens with Texas is, they get a ton of commits in the early spring and look good in the opening rankings. But other schools then surge up past them because the Longhorns wrap up in the late summer.
That doesn't seem to be the case this year because Texas is still doing all they can for prospects like Andrus Peat, Dorial Green-Beckham, Landon Collins and a few others.
