College Football Recruiting 2012: Committed Recruits Who'll Dominate Incumbents

Edwin WeathersbyJun 7, 2018

For this read, I think I have a couple players who have a chance to come into their committed schools and make a serious burn move up the depth chart. Due to the fact that the incumbents at their committed schools haven't gotten it done, these recruits could start early.

Every recruit wants to make an early impact, but there are a combination of factors that can derail those hopes. So the smart recruits pick the best schools for them, but also pay close attention to the depth charts.

Here are six recruits I think did a solid job of that.

6. Brian Kimbrow, RB

1 of 6

Without even looking at the Vanderbilt roster or depth chart I can already tell Kimbrow can make an impact early. The Commodores are so low on numbers that they held a serious mini-camp version of walk-on tryouts this past winter and spring.

So their numbers are low.

Combine that with the fact that Kimbrow is one of the 100 best players in the country, and it's safe to add him on this list.

5. Dominique Wheeler, WR

2 of 6

Wheeler may be the highest rated WR to come to Texas Tech in recent memory, as even Michael Crabtree was not a 5-star recruit.

He's as talented or more talented than the likes of Eric Ward, Darrin Moore and Cornelius Douglas, so I think Wheeler can make a quick move up the depth chart in Lubbock.

He's a 6'1", 180-pound WR with great speed, quickness and RAC ability.

4. Jelani Hamilton, DE

3 of 6

Hamilton plays hard and seems to be pretty competitive. The incumbent players at Miami (not naming any names) are used to the Randy Shannon-way of lagging and not reaching their potential.

I think Hamilton, with all of his 6'5" and 250 pounds, can come in and, based on sheer hustle, beat out a couple DEs on the Miami DL.

A lot of the incumbents are going to be in for a shock as Al Golden and Randy Shannon are like night and day. Toss in the fact that Hamilton is one of Golden's recruits and you start to see that Hamilton and Anthony Chickillo may be a great tandem in the future.

3. Matt Jones, RB

4 of 6

Jones is a prospect I really like as he is a 6'3", 210-pound big RB who has good run strength, nimble feet and solid vision. He's a bell cow-type—a lot more so than a home-run hitter.

I think when he gets to Florida, his main competition will be Mack Brown, and as such a big back in a pro-style offense, Jones could be in line for a lot of carries as a freshman.

Just don't tell him he may be moved to LB.

2. John Gray, RB

5 of 6

Oh no, this is no indictment on Malcolm Brown. Gray's on this list because I fully expect him and Brown to become a dangerous tandem, as Gray is better than the rest of the Longhorn rock toters.

Traylon Shead flashes some good ability, but Gray is such a special player. Him and Brown should develop into a historic tandem in the likes of Bush and White and Williams and Brown among others.

1. Zach Kline, QB

6 of 6

The more I watch Kline the more I like him. At 6'2", 205 pounds, Kline is probably more talented than incumbent Zach Maynard and, at the very least, he's better than Allen Brigdford among the others left at the QB position in Berkeley.

Kline has a cannon for an arm, works on his craft and has some sneaky athleticism and mobility in the pocket.

I think if he can come in, prove to be a quick study in Jeff Tedford's offense, he can beat out the incumbents in the Bay.
