Alabama Football: Why Recruiting Jameis Winston Scares Alabama Fans
There are some recruits who are simply recruited as "athletes" because they can play more than one position equally well. Jameis Winston is being recruited as a quarterback, but then "athlete" would certainly apply, too, as he could play multiple football positions and multiple sports.
And therein lies the fear factor for most Alabama fans.
You see, even though he is one of the top quarterback prospects in the nation, he is also one of the top baseball prospects in the nation. We're talking first-round-Major-League-Baseball-draft good. We're talking maybe two-to-three-million-dollars-a-year good.
And there is the fear.
Will Jameis commit to Alabama, keep them from signing another quarterback and then decide that he just can't turn down millions of dollars to play football for free?
Winston is the nation's No. 1 dual-threat quarterback recruit in the country. He could gain better experience at Alabama and then perhaps make millions in the NFL in four to five years.
Or he could simply decide at the end of this year to make millions in Major League Baseball this year.
It all comes down to a decision that will have to be made by a young man whose toughest decision so far may have been whom to ask to the prom.
And Alabama fans are scared.
But not the staff at Alabama, who continue to push for the 6'4'', 220-pound quarterback to come to Alabama and be the next big thing in football.
Soon enough, the Hueytown, Ala., native will have to make a choice as all great high school recruits will. But that choice may be not just which school to attend, as the recruits will do, but which sport to play.
Alabama fans are holding their breath.
