College Football: Five Heisman Hopefuls That Wont Be Invited to New York in 2011
Every year, there are a handful of players who deserve to go to New York to compete for the Heisman Trophy yet are never invited. Normally it is the running back or wide receiver from a small school or a quarterback from a pass happy offense.
Players are no longer analyzed by their statistics and performances, but are judged more on the prestige of their school.
If there were no limitations as to who can get invited, these five most likely would make the cut.
5. Denard Robinson (Michigan)
1 of 5Next season is lining up to be an even better season for the Wolverines and no matter how good Denard Robinson is, he won’t be invited to New York.
Last year he threw for 2,570 yards and ran for 1,702 yards; second most in the nation. He ran and threw for 18 touchdowns, in addition to two games in which he rand and threw for 200 yards.
He should be even faster, bigger and stronger next year. I think he is always overlooked and will continue to be next season.
4. Bryant Moniz (Hawaii)
2 of 5He should be on everyone’s list for potential Heisman Trophy winners, but I have yet to see his name surface.
He threw for 5,040 yards and 39 touchdowns; both the best in the nation last year. Last year, he only threw less than 300 plus yards in three games.
Greg Salas, his favorite receiver graduated, but I still imagine that Bryant Moniz will throw for over 4,500 yards. I will never understand how the player with the most yards and touchdown passes is not invited to New York.
Colt Brennan was never shown the attention he deserved in college and unfortunately, the Warrior’s Bryant Moniz will follow in his footsteps.
3. Jayron Hosley (Virginia Tech)
3 of 5Who?? For everyone who doesn’t know, Jayron Hosley had the most interceptions in the nation last year with nine! Going into his junior year, Virginia Tech again has a lock down corner.
He had 39 tackles to go along with his nine picks. He will never get invited unless he scores a couple of times, returns punts as well and becomes an egotistical loudmouth.
Corners don’t get the love they deserve, especially those that lead the nation in interceptions as underclassmen. He should have another great year and I would bet the Hokies corner gets no love from the fraternity in New York.
2. Brandon Weeden (Oklahoma State)
4 of 5As a Heisman Trophy dark horse, Brandon Weeden stands no chance of making it to New York. Justin Blackmon overshadowed Brandon Weeden and his amazing year last season, and this upcoming year will be no different.
Last year, Weeden threw for 4,277 yards and 34 touchdowns. The 4,277 yards were third in the nation, to go along with a completion rate of 66.9 percent on his 511 throwing attempts.
He is a very good quarterback and unfortunately, he will never get he attention he deserves until he reaches the NFL combine next April.
1. Ryan Broyles (Oklahoma)
5 of 5In his past three seasons with the Sooners, Ryan Broyles has hauled in 266 catches, 3429 yards and 35 touchdowns. He has one of the best quarterbacks in the nation throwing him the ball in Landry Jones and plays in one of the most explosive offenses run by Bob Stoops.
I think that Justin Blackmon will over-shadow Ryan Broyles again next year and won’t be invited to New York.
He had the most catches in the nation last year, went to a BCS bowl and still isn’t rewarded for his unbelievable season.
