College Football 2011: Hey SEC, Here Are 9 Teams Who Could End Your Title Reign

Carl StineJun 7, 2018

Dear SEC,

Your dominance in the world of college football has been well documented.

Your praises have been sung, your accomplishments magnified and repeated, growing greater with every retelling.

And with just cause.

Stories of Tebow, Newton, Ingram and Miles are replete with tales of powerful performances, coupled with incredible feats of football prowess.

No conference has come even close to achieving your level of dominance over the last five years.

But now is not the time to rest on your laurels.

These things are cyclical, and at some point, someone else will take over as the new BCS champion.

These teams are your most likely challengers for 2011.

9. Miami Hurricanes

1 of 9

I can hear your chuckles from here, but don't let your confidence turn into arrogance and blind you to the potential lying in Miami.

The Hurricanes are one step away from a title.

Jacory Harris and his struggles have been well-documented, but should he figure out his accuracy issues, the Hurricanes will be tough for anyone to beat, including your teams, SEC.

If any team in the country can match your strengths, it is the 'Canes.

Speed is prominent all over the field for these guys, and their raw athletic potential is scary.

It's a long shot, but don't sleep on them.

8. Wisconsin Badgers

2 of 9

Once again, you think I jest.

"No slow, lumbering squad of backwards football players can keep up with the speed of the SEC."

You are correct.

The Badgers might find it difficult to keep up with the team speed of Alabama, Arkansas or LSU.

But that, my friend is a two-way street.

The Badgers' bruising running game is difficult to slow down. They have the strength to overpower most squads, and with Russell Wilson now at the helm, it's tough to place a ceiling on their potential.

Don't overlook Bret Bielema's squad—even if you have owned the Big Ten recently.

7. Texas A&M Aggies

3 of 9

The Aggies will also have a very potent rushing attack and an offense that can keep up with anything you can field.

Head coach Mike Sherman is slowly inching A&M ahead of Texas in the battle for the Longhorn state, and if anyone can challenge Oklahoma for the Big 12 title in 2011, it's Texas A&M.

Even with the departure of All-American Von Miller, the Aggies' defense will be improved in their second year of the new system they have implemented.

While the Sooners pose a huge barrier to these guys even reaching the BCS, if they somehow get through that obstacle, beware, SEC.

6. Stanford Cardinal

4 of 9

All the Cardinal need to end your reign of terror is a little Luck.

And they have it.

Yes, they have a solid, cohesive defensive unit, a good running game and receivers like Chris Owusu to add a new dimension to their already-potent passing attack.

But more scary for you, they have Andrew Luck.

The man is the best pure passer in the nation (apologies to Kellen Moore fanatics).

While the Cardinal have a tough schedule, including games against Oregon and Notre Dame, it's not totally impossible for them to make it undefeated.

In which case, Luck will be gunning for you...

5. Boise State Broncos.

5 of 9

The Broncos find themselves in a new conference, and yet they have a great opportunity to climb aboard the BCS party ship.

While they may find the level of competition within the MWC a little tougher than the WAC, the Broncos are still very capable of running the table, in which case they should get a shot at you in the title game.

If they can defend the "smurf turf", a challenger from a non-aq may be facing you for the title.

Kellen Moore will again put up video game like numbers, and Chris Petersen has some tricks up his sleeve.

Don't overlook the Broncos, or you may sound like Gordon Gee, and none of us wants that...

4. Nebraska Cornhuskers

6 of 9

Similar to Boise State, the Huskers are entering their inaugural season in a new conference, and Nebraska is predicted by many pundits to dominate the Big Ten in their first season as a member.

While that may not happen, it's definitely a possibility.

There is no better defense in the country, and Taylor Martinez is a scary dual-threat type who showed the potential for great things last season.

A potentially dangerous formula, should you have to face them in the title game...

3. Florida State Seminoles

7 of 9

Nigel Bradham leads a defensive unit that boasts a plethora of athletic talent and speed.

The 'Noles are from your neck of the woods, and familiar with the type of players you recruit and field.

As a matter of fact, they may be pulling ahead of several of your squads in the recruiting battle.

Couple this with their incredible depth on offense and playmaker E.J. Manuel at quarterback, and FSU poses a serious roadblock that could derail your dreams of a sixth consecutive title.

2. Oregon Ducks

8 of 9

The Ducks put a scare into the fighting Cam Newtons in the last BCS National Championship game.

Oregon could finally break through this season.

The prolific offense that is faster than most track teams will be explosive once again, with two potential Heisman candidates in the backfield.

Their team speed is second to none and should they get back to the title game. Their experience from last season could push them over the top against any one of your teams.

Fear the Quack Attack...

1. Oklahoma Sooners

9 of 9

Often teams are hyped all out of proportion before the season starts and nobody believes it anyway.

When it comes to the Sooners, it's better to just believe it.

Landry Jones and Ryan Broyles form the best quarterback/receiver duo in the country, and you don't have anything that can touch those two.

While the defense may not be as solid as most of your stout squads, it is more than serviceable and will wreak havoc in opposing backfields at times.

If the Sooners can navigate a dangerous Big 12 schedule and a trip to Tallahassee, "Big-Game Bobby" will snag another title for Norman.
