College Football: Nine Coaches Who Have Won Their Last National Championship
This list is a run-down of coaches who are done winning national championships.
All of them except one are currently active, and of course, there are all of the Big East coaches.
These guys have all enjoyed immense success at some point in their coaching careers, reaching the very pinnacle of the sport.
At this point, they are either fighting to win their conference or just to stay in the game of football.
Either way, these guys have had their last hurrah.
9. Urban Meyer
1 of 9Meyer is retired, as of now.
Even so, there are rumors floating around that he is being considered for the Ohio State job.
If he does, he will still not be enough to take the Buckeyes to the NCG.
Given their trouble with the NCAA, the Buckeyes shouldn't sniff a championship for a time.
Even if the NCAA is satisfied with the Buckeyes' bogus self-imposed sanctions, recruiting is already becoming an issues, and Nebraska, Wisconsin and Michigan State are waiting in the wings to take over control of the conference.
Meyer will not win at OSU, unless, of course, Tim Tebow has a younger brother with his talent floating around somewhere.
8. The Entire Big East
2 of 9No coach from the Big East has won a national championship since 2002, when Miami was a part of the conference.
There are no coaches in the Big East that have won a title, and it's going to stay that way, although Dana Holgorsen may get West Virginia close.
7. Larry Coker
3 of 9Coker is back to coaching.
He is taking over as the head coach in the inaugural season as the head coach of the University of Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners.
UTSA is an FCS school, but even with a playoff, Coker will not win another championship, at any level.
It just takes to long to develop a program into a contender.
6. Steve Spurrier
4 of 9Steve Spurrier is the most entertaining coach in college football.
He led the Florida Gators to a title in 1996 and has since moved on to South Carolina.
The Gamecocks played for the conference championship last season but were the third or fourth best team in the conference.
The Gamecocks must win soon if they are going to win the BCS NCG, as they have a great blend of experienced upperclassmen and talented young guys.
But, it ain't gonna happen.
The SEC is just too tough, and Spurrier and South Carolina will soon sink back out of the national consciousness and back into relative obscurity.
5. Howard Schnellenberger
5 of 9Yet another former Miami Hurricanes coach who is still hanging around.
Schllenberger won the title at Miami back in 1983—the Hurricanes' first.
He has since coached at Louisville, Oklahoma and Florida Atlantic, where he is currently the head coach.
He has the most wins of any coach in bowl games without a loss, at 6-0, and was the driving force behind the Owls' move to the FBS.
While he has been a very successful and influential man, pigs will fly, and the Cubs will win a World Series before FAU wins a title.
4. Mack Brown
6 of 9Mack Brown is a great coach, no doubt about it.
Even with the terrible season the 'Horns had last season, it won't be long before they rebound and are competing for the Big 12 conference title on a regular basis.
However, the level of competition seems to be picking up withing the conference, with Oklahoma State, Texas A&M and Missouri presenting regular challenges to the conference front-runners.
The Aggies in particular are keeping up with Texas on the recruiting scene, and Mike Sherman's club will be a barrier to repeated success for the 'Horns.
A one-loss Big 12 team is going to have a difficult time getting to the BCS NCG, and the 'Horns are going to have at least one loss a season for a while.
At least, there was only a 35-year gap between the last two Longhorns' titles...
3. Dennis Erickson
7 of 9Erickson has a very good team, that is a dark horse pick to win the Pac-12 in 2011.
The Sun Devils boast a solid defense and a new quarterback leading a team that should be able to throw up points in a hurry.
However, they are not good enough to go undefeated, and that's what it would take to win the BCS Championship.
Erickson won two national championships while at Miami and will win two less than that before he retires.
2. Gene Chizik
8 of 9Chizik coached a great 2010.
Of course, my grandma could have coached that team to a title with Gus Malzahn at offensive coordinator.
Other than that, he has never done anything worth mentioning.
The argument here is that Cam Newton will not be returning to school, and at some point, Chizik is going to lose Malzahn the wizard.
Auburn has had some good recruiting classes but expect the Tigers to sink back to playing second fiddle in the state of Alabama very soon and stay there for a long time.
1. Joe Paterno
9 of 9Paterno has been coaching for what seems like an eternity.
Under his leadership, the Nittany Lions have won two national championships(1982, 1986) and five unbeaten, untied seasons(1968, 1969, 1973, 1986 and 1994)
He will be remembered as one of the greatest coaches in the history of sports.
Unfortunately, the Lions will not take home another championship for JoePa.
Over the last decade, they have had difficulty getting over the hump and have been a second-tier Big Ten team.
There is no reason to expect anything different before Paterno retires.
