College Football Recruiting 2012: The 5 Most Overrated Recruits
The first I would like to say is that even though this list says "overrated," what I truly mean is that these are recruits I think are ranked too high. I still think these kids can play with anybody, but I just have some questions about their skill set.
So again, these are players I feel may be a bit too high because I have some reservations about their games. These players are still very talented and should be great college starters.
But here's why they may be overrated.
5. Brionte Dunn, RB
1 of 5Dunn is your prototypical big back, bruising type of runner. He's a 6'1", 215-pounder with excellent run strength and straight-line ability.
But that's just the thing, it seems Dunn is at his best only in a straightline and lacks a good amount of wiggle to his running style. I also question his long/breakaway speed.
Those are two critical position factors that I value for a RB, to which Dunn is not strong in.
4. Se'von Pittman, DE
2 of 5Pittman is a 6'4", 225-pound DE prospect with excellent athleticism, play speed and raw pass rushing ability. He appears to possess all the tools to develop into a solid starting DE for Michigan State.
Only thing is he lacks a great amount of play strength and really struggles to shed blocks and has problems anchoring vs. mass/power. These questions lead me to believe Pittman could have some issues with being a consistent every down DE in college.
For that, I have to say that while I like Pittman as a prospect, he may be a bit too high on many rankings lists.
3. Jordan Simmons, OL
3 of 5Simmons is a bit of an enigma to me. I went and checked him out in person as a junior, but he was injured. He looks the part of a 6'5", 335-pound OL, but he has a wealth of baby fat that he needs to shed.
Toss in the fact that based on various reports from Scout.com and ESPN among others of his struggles at The Opening last week, then I'm led to put him on this list.
He's rated a 5-star recruit by Scout.com, but I'm not convinced he's a 5-star caliber player right now.
2. Trey Williams, RB
4 of 5I love Trey Williams' talents and I'm a fan of the 5'8", 180-pound jitterbug. He's quick, explosive, stronger than many think and very agile. I think he will be a great luxury back and "jack of all trades" offensive weapon for Texas A&M.
But that's thing, I only see Williams as a luxury back and not an every down RB. I just don't put as much stock into luxury backs as I do cow bell runners.
It's not a knock on Williams, as he is a heck of a player, I just think as high as I see him on many lists that that is too high for a luxury back.
1. John Theus, OT
5 of 5First things first: I have Theus as one of the top 15 players overall on my board, so he's not overrated.
He's just too high as Scout.com lists him as the fourth best player in the country.
6'6", 295 pounds, Theus is a great OT with excellent snap quickness, point of attack strength and finish ability. He's at his best as a run blocker, and is solid as a pass protector.
Well, that's the gist of a RT, not a LT. In football, LTs always take rank over RTs and I think Theus will be a RT. The fourth best player in the country can't be a future RT.
