College Football Recruiting 2012: 5 Coaches Who Can't Get it Done Anymore
There are some coaches who are having a great year on the recruiting trail and are going strong in 2012. Then there are some coaches who just seem to can't be able to find the magic that they once had.
It's sad to see when someone loses the "it" or the magic they once had to get things done, but it happens to the best of them. This was a hard list to do, but the following five coaches aren't getting it done on the recruiting trail anymore these days.
5. Tom O'Brien
1 of 5O'Brien was able to recruit solid talent to Boston College during his tenure there, yet since his becoming lead wolf at NC State, the Wolfpack have failed to land a top-25 recruiting class mainly according to Scout.com.
NC State, in my opinion, is a sleeping-giant school, as I believe one can win big there. But O'Brien isn't hauling in good recruiting classes based on the rankings.
4. Ron Zook
2 of 52007 and 2008 saw The Zookster bring in top-25 classes for Illinois with great talent like Arrellious Benn, Corey Liuget and Martez Wilson. Things looked great for the future of Illini recruiting.
Well, not anymore. There have been no top-25 classes since then for Ron Zook and while he is one of the hardest-working recruiting head coaches in the country, he has not been able to land much elite talent since the mid-2000s.
3. Mike Locksley
3 of 5New Mexico, as an overall program, is not in good shape. So Locksley does deserve a break, yet aside from a few recruits from the Maryland and Florida areas, his recruiting sting has yet to be felt.
Locksley was a great recruiter for Illinois during his time as an assistant there, as he has a lot of pull among the high school ranks in the Mid-Atlantic region.
However, he just can't seem to find the magic down in New Mexico.
2. Rick Neuheisel
4 of 5Slick Rick was off to a great start at UCLA, hauling in two consecutive top-10 classes in his first two cycles in Westwood. He was talking a big game and the Bruin brass were well pleased.
Now Neuheisel is on the hot seat, and I believe the main reason is because he has gotten very little production from those to great recruiting classes. The production hasn't matched the talent and some recruits were even mis-evaluated.
Last year, UCLA signed one of the all-around worst classes in the country and this year has yet show any dramatic improvement on the trail thus far.
1. Turner Gill
5 of 5I have Gill on this list and No. 1 on this list because at his opening presser upon being named head coach at KU, he went out of his way to stress the fact he would be a force on the recruiting trail.
Still waiting...
Kansas hasn't had any impact on the trail during Gill's tenure, which is a shock because he was riding a high wave coming from his success at Buffalo.
He seems to have lost the magic he had with the Bulls and needs to find it soon for the Jayhawks.
