College Football Recruiting 2012: Top 5 Under-the-Radar Recruits

Edwin WeathersbyJun 7, 2018

We're going to flip the term "under the radar" this time around. For this read, the term under the radar won't mean underrated or overlooked, but more of which prime-time recruits are laying low.

These players don't do many interviews, more speculation than fact is known about their recruitment and they are somewhat enigmatic figures on the recruiting scene. They're "under the radar" in the recruiting scene.

Let's see if we can get a read on them on our radar screen.

5. LaDarrell McNeil, DS

1 of 5

According to ESPN, McNeil just spoke to the press about his recruitment over the weekend, telling reporters at The Opening that Oklahoma State leads A&M, TCU and Notre Dame.

He hasn't said much nor given too many updates on potential visits, camps and a true leader, so this update over the weekend from him is huge.

I have McNeil as one of the top 100 overall recruits in the country and one of the top 10 most vicious hitters in the 2012 class.

He just doesn't seek the recruiting press spotlight much.

4. Eli Harold, DE/LB

2 of 5

An explosive pass rusher, Harold has given some insight into his recruitment, but that was months ago. He has a top three of Virginia, Florida and North Carolina.

It seems like a flip-flop of Virginia and Florida occurs routinely, but that's speculation. We just haven't heard much from Harold in a while, and that makes him under the radar.

Hopefully we get an update soon from him, as to who truly leads, what visits he will take in the fall and when a decision will be made.

3. Channing Ward, DE

3 of 5

Talk about flying under the radar—Ward doesn't say much if anything at all about his recruitment. He's extremely quiet about things and doesn't really seem too interested in being a media favorite.

His interviews are short, don't offer much information and he seems to be focused on just playing football. Schools like Ole Miss, LSU and Alabama have been mentioned around him.

But I doubt many people really know what Ward is thinking outside his trusted circle of family, friends and coaches.

2. Rushel Shell, RB

4 of 5

I haven't seen an update on Shell since February. Seriously. He's almost nowhere to be found as far as speaking to the media about his recruitment, and the last interview I read of his, he seemed more intent on talking about his team than recruiting.

He's a 5-star RB with offers from everyone, including Florida, Ohio State, Auburn, Pitt and Alabama among others, but no one knows much right now in regards to the status of his recruitment.

As far as any updates go, Shell is almost prime to be put on the back of a milk carton.

1. Dorial Green-Beckham, WR

5 of 5

Green-Beckham rarely speaks to the media, and chances are if you have any information on him then you got it from his father/high school coach who does most of the talking for DGB.

He just seems to not really be a fan of the heavy attention and spotlight. According to scout.com, his father has said Dorial is not a fan of the recruiting process at all.

Missouri, Alabama, Arkansas and Oklahoma are rumored front-runners but a paired-down list has yet to be announced from Green-Beckham.

A decision won't be made until after the season, as he will shut down all visits and recruiting business once the season starts to focus on the field.
