Georgia Football: Predicting the 2011 Offensive Depth Chart

Brian JonesJun 7, 2018

The Georgia Bulldogs known they are going to have their hands full on Sept. 3 when they face Boise State.

So when preseason camp begins, competition for positions will be intense. On offense, some positions are set such as quarterback, tight end, center and kicker. But there are other spots that are up for grabs, and that should make the players give everything they have on the practice field.

Here's a look at the projected offensive starters for the Bulldogs when they face Boise state in their season opener.

Quarterback: Aaron Murray

1 of 12

Aaron Murray could have the worst set of preseason practices in his life and he would still be the starter on opening day. Murray played with poised and confidence all season long last year, and if everything goes his way this season, he could be a finalist for the Heisman Trophy.

Backup: Huston Mason, Christian LeMay

Running Back: Isaiah Crowell

2 of 12

True freshman Isaiah Crowell becomes the new starting running back for the Dawgs, and it's not just because of his talent. He is elevated to the No. 1 spot because Caleb King is ruled academically ineligible for the 2011 season. Regardless, the goal was to have Crowell on the field as soon as possible because many believe he is the next big running back in Athens.

Backups: Carlton Thomas, Ken Malcome

Fullback: Bruce Figgins

3 of 12

Bruce Figgins was a starting tight end last season. But with fullback position very thin, the coaching staff decided to move him to fullback because of his blocking and catching ability. Figgins will be a huge key in the running game because he will open holes for Crowell, which will be needed in the early stages of the season.

Backup: Alexander Ogletree

Wide Receiver: Tavarres King

4 of 12

Out of all the receivers on the roster, Tavarres King is the only one who has proved he can be an every-down player. King caught 27 passes last year, and he is ready to fill the big shoes left by A.J. Green. In order for the Bulldogs to have a great year, King will have to play even better than he did last year.

Backup: Michael Bennett

Wide Receiver: Rantavious Wooten

5 of 12

The other WR position is up in the air, but when it's all said and done, Rantavious Wooten will be starting on opening day. He only caught seven passes last year, but when a team has Green, Kris Durham and tight end Orson Charles, catches are hard to come by. Wooten does have to show consistency if he wants to hold on to the job.

Backups: Israel Troupe, Marlon Brown

Tight End: Orson Charles

6 of 12

And speaking of Charles, he comes into this season as the clear-cut No. 1 tight end. He had a strong 2010 season and is expected to have a better 2011 campaign. Over the last two seasons his blocking skills have improved and his catching ability can rival any wide receiver in the SEC.

Backup: Aron White

Right Tackle: Justin Anderson

7 of 12

After spending one season on defense, Justin Anderson is back on offense and will start at right tackle. Anderson played one game last year at nose tackle and missed the rest of the 2010 season due to a turf toe injury. He will be one of three seniors on the offensive line and due to his size (6-5, 342 pounds),Ā  Anderson should be a huge factor in the running game.

Backup: Dallas Lee

Right Guard: Chris Burnette

8 of 12

This position will be up for grabs when preseason camp starts. Chris Burnette is the top backup at center, but he could very well win the right guard spot because Brent Benedict, who was slated to start before the season, left the team due to personal reasons. Burnette suffered numerous injuries last year, but now he is healthy and is ready to pick up where he left off this past spring.

Backup: Zach DeBell

Center: Ben Jones

9 of 12

If there is one person one the offensive line that is considered the leader, it would be Ben Jones. If there is one person on the entire team that is considered the leader, that would also be Ben Jones. He has seen it all and done it all for the Bulldogs and if the offense want's to achieve their goals for 2011, Jones will have to be the one to lead the way.

Backup: Chris Brunette

Left Guard: Kenarious Gates

10 of 12

Kenarious Gates made three starts last year and performed well. Now he will have a chance to be a full-time starter at left guard. Gates has good size and is very intelligent. Out of all the young players on the team, Gates is the guy that plays more like a veteran.

Backup: Dallas Lee

Left Tackle: Cordy Glenn

11 of 12

Jones may be the leader of the team, but Cordy Glenn is one of the best offensive lineman in the SEC. Jones moved from left guard to left tackle to better protect Murray's blind side. Playing left tackle in the SEC is not easy, but Glenn should and will be up for the challenge.

Backup: Kolton Houston

Kicker: Blair Walsh

12 of 12

Like Murray, Blair Walsh could not perform well in preseason camp and he would still win the job at kicker. Walsh has been a two-time Lou Groza Award finalist and with this being his final year, he has a very good chance to win the award. Along with him and punter Drew Butler, they make the best combination of specialist in the country.

Backup: Brandon Bogotay
