Alabama Football: Will Late-Arriving Brent Calloway Be with the Running Backs?
Brent Calloway committed to Alabama in his sophomore season of high school, then in early 2011, he switched his commitment to Auburn. But by National Signing Day, he had switched back yet again to Alabama.
Somewhere along the way, Calloway wasn't getting the kind of advice he needed in his classwork to have all the necessary classwork in place to attend the summer session at Alabama as was initially planned.
Today, Brent tweeted: "@BrentCalloway:
I start school in 4 weeks I'm still going to Baka jus goin through some trials with he NCAA trippen ima be okay though is all in Gods hands."
According to Calloway, there was a mix-up on the classes he was supposed to take, and that will be concluded in about four weeks.
On National Signing Day, maybe the staff at Alabama was leaning on him working into the linebacker corp. With two running backs transferring and one going down with an ACL, it looks now that the talented athlete may be shown the ropes of the running back corps instead.
With his 4.5 40-yard speed to go along with his 6'3'' and around 225-pound frame, he's one of those rare individuals you could plug into a lot of slots, and that's why he was listed as an athlete instead of just one position.
Though showing up in August is late by Saban standards, the same time frame was used by Eddie Lacy, so that alone shows that you can get into the playbook that fast.
And quite frankly, the playbook at running back is easier to digest than the one for linebacker in the Nick Saban system. He should see special teams play in all likelihood on punt and kick teams.
Linebackers must learn a fairly complicated assignment scheme and running back has always been more instinctual once you're handed the pigskin.
One of the reasons for the initial switch to Auburn was the chance to continue playing running back, which Calloway felt was his best position. Last season at Russellville High School, he rushed for 29 touchdowns and 1,974 yards.
In 2009, he rushed for 32 touchdowns and 1,600 yards. He is an experienced running back and could come in and help put that depth back in the running back pool. That should please Calloway.
Alabama fans are just glad to know that all the indecision is over, that the coursework that needs to be done looks like it's quickly being completed and that this talented individual will soon be on campus and getting ready.
The Tide could use him right now.
This is part four of five part series on "Non Starters" who the Tide will rely on if they are to roll to another championship.
Part one is HERE - It is the role Eddie Lacy must fill
Part two is HERE - It is the role that DeQuan Menzie may fill
Part three is HERE - It is about the little known heretofore backup center - Kellen Williams
