College Football 2011: Ohio State, Oregon and 3 Other Programs NCAA Will Nail

Edwin WeathersbyJun 7, 2018

Either the NCAA is on a serious power trip right now or some of these college football programs have forgotten the rules. Any way you slice it, there are some serious looming sanctions coming from the NCAA.

I'm going to give you five schools I think are on the chopping block and will suffer some serious consequences for their actions.

Here we go.

5. Boise State

1 of 5

Boise State really doesn't face anything too severe to be honest with you. The Broncos avoided the dreaded "lack of institutional control" phrase that seems to be the straw breaking the camel's back for other programs.

BSU has self-reported violations to the likes of providing housing and transportation for 63 players around the Boise area to help attendance in offseason workouts.

The Broncos have self-imposed a three-year probation period and met with the NCAA on June 10th.

4. North Carolina

The Tar Heels may be in for stiff penalties, as Matt Hinton's Rivals blog post explains. We already saw them suspend many of their star players last season for extended periods of time.

The charges stem from academic cheating, improper benefits from agents and NFL assistant coaches and a failure to monitor players' off-field behavior and activities.

Former assistant John Blake is under heavy scrutiny as he allegedly took money from the late Gary Wichard, who recently passed away.

UNC is scheduled to meet with the NCAA in October.

3. Tennessee

3 of 5

The Tennessee situation is pretty perplexing because the two coaches at the forefront of the alleged violations are not there. Lane Kiffin bolted for USC after a year and Bruce Pearl was fired earlier this year.

But the NCAA doesn't care, as it has found violations of impermissible contact, failure to furnish relevant and complete information in cooperating with the investigation by Pearl, failure to promote an atmosphere of compliance, failure to monitor staff and other violations.

Tennessee is awaiting word from the NCAA after meeting with the association in June.

2. Oregon

They say the cover-up is always worse than the scandal, and so is the case for Chip Kelly. Oregon has been outed by Willie Lyles, and we have uncovered and discovered the sleazy industry of "street agents" in football recruiting.

I have had conversations, meetings and plans to began my own recruiting and scouting service for colleges, but after this latest fiasco with Lyles giving the business a bad name, I have decided against it.

According to Yahoo! Sports, Lyles has said that he was paid to steer recruits Oregon's way and influence them in favor of the Ducks. He said Kelly has tried to cover it up with scrambling phone calls, canceled checks and other mysterious and suspicious actions.

This could cost Kelly his job in Eugene.

1. Ohio State

5 of 5

The situation at Ohio State has already gotten ugly. Jim Tressel resigned and Terrelle Pryor has entered the potential 2011 NFL supplemental draft.

"Lack of institutional control" has been tossed around here and that's not good. From the alleged tattoo scandal, to Tressel allegedly not being forthright since he allegedly knew about the situation, to Pryor allegedly having new cars and making money at autograph sessions, there a ton of violations here, many highlighted by Sports Illustrated's investigation.

We can only wait and see what the NCAA does to Ohio State.
