Wisconsin Football: Is Russell Wilson the Missing Ingredient for a BCS Title Run
Russell Wilson has decided to continue his football career at the university of Wisconsin, thus vaulting the Badgers into a position they have been trying to get to in years; a national championship position.
Last season, Wisconsin finished 11-2 losing to Michigan State and TCU in the Rose Bowl. That was under the direction of a mighty rushing attack and senior quarterback Scott Tolzien. Tolzien finished the season with 2,459 yards passing, 16 touchdowns and six interceptions. Compare those numbers to Wilson's numbers last season at North Carolina State.3,563 yards passing, 28 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. Wilson also rushed for 435 yards and nine touchdowns.
I'm not trying to say that Tolzien had a bad year, but combining almost the same offense with a dynamic quarterback with a great arm and great leadership. The thought is scary enough. Now the offensive line will have to replace some key offensive lineman from last season, but that doesn't mean they won't be a solid unit, after all this is Wisconsin we're talking about.
Wilson will also have the benefit of handing the ball off to not one, but two capable runners in Montae Ball and James White. Ball had 996 yards rushing while White had 1,052. The duo combined for 32 touchdowns on the ground.
Another thing that Wilson is going to benefit from is a solid defense. While J.J. Watt will be gone, the defense will still have stand outs like Mike Taylor and Chris Borland at linebacker. Antonio Fenelus at corner and Aaron Henry at safety.
Most importantly the schedule is manageable. Nebraska, Michigan State and Ohio State will be tough tests; as well as the finale against Penn State, but the rest of the schedule seem to be easy match-ups. If Russell Wilson can step in and be the quarterback that he's used to being, this team is going to soar high.
Wilson will need to learn the offense quick and be efficient, but knowing him that shouldn't be a problem. Wilson just might be the final piece that Wisconsin needed to send them to a BCS title game.
