Jadeveon Clowney: 10 Reasons He Shouldn't Go To Alabama On National Signing Day

Edwin WeathersbyJun 7, 2018

Jadeveon Clowney is the nation's top high school football player this year and has narrowed his list down to Alabama, South Carolina, Clemson, North Carolina, Florida State and LSU.

Clowney will wait to make his decision past National Signing Day, as he is struggling with telling someone "no". Most feel he will come down to deciding between in-state South Carolina and Alabama. While there are pros to every program all around college football, there are some cons the come with them.

Here are 10 reasons why he shouldn't sing with the Tide.

10. No Palmetto Bowl

1 of 10

Clowney grew up in South Carolina and self wittnessed the awfully bitter rivalry between Clemson and South Carolina, two schools on his final list.

Many players who grow up playing football in the Palmetto State aspire to play in the annual Palmetto Bowl, one way or another and Clowney could be no different.

If he goes to Alabama, he will miss out on playing in this game and never have a chance experience it.

9. Saban Could Get an Itch Again

As USC fans faced the same situation when Pete Carrol started enduring success in Los Angeles, will the same happen for Alabama?

Nick Saban has stated that this is final job, but he also stated he wasn't going to take this job so no one truly knows what will happen in the future. Saban, like Carrol, did not fare well in the NFL could want one more crack at the league.

Who's to say the Tide don't go on to win 2 more National Championships in the next four years while Clowney would be there and Saban gets wooed by a big money owner and bolts for the pros?

8. SEC West Vs. SEC East

3 of 10

There's no question how good top to bottom the SEC is as a conference.

Yet the West division probably a bit tougher than the East right now as the West is home to 'Bama, LSU and Auburn. In the East, Florida is going through a coaching change, Tennessee is rebuilding and Georgia is as well.

Winning championships is what Clowney is about and while Alabama is a team capable of doing so, the road may be easier at South Carolina.

7. Tuscaloosa Fish Bowl

Clowney is a bit of a shy guy and hasn't done too much media interviews or dominated the spotlight.

In Tuscaloosa and whole state of Alabama, Crimson Tide football players are scrutinized on how much they sneeze. Attention is everywhere for 'Bama players and they are treated like rock stars.

Clowney may not want that kind of attention and just may want to be a football player and student. If he goes to 'Bama then he better get ready to have the spotlight on him 24-7.

6. Uncertainty at The QB Position For The Tide

Alabam aenters the Spring portion of their year with a question mark at the signal caller position.

Will it be AJ McCarron or Phillip Sims? A similar dilemma is alive at LSU with Jordan Jefferson vs. incoming Zach Mettenberger.

Florida State has EJ Manuel, Clemson has Tahj Boyd and South Carolina will have Stephen Garcia back for one more year at the helm.

5. Chance To Be a Headliner

If Clowney signs with the Tide, he will receive much fanfare, and be regarded as a major haul for Alabama football. But there is a reason that Tide fans want him so bad, but yet feel losing him is not the end of the world.

That's because Alabama's recruiting class is full of many top notch prospects, and Clowney would be just another all world player at 'Bama.

Even though he doesn't like or want media attention, superstar players like Clowney do have an ego of some sorts in the least. Signing with the Tide would force Clowney to tailor his ego down to the size of a button as Alabama's roster is littered with talent up and down.

4. The Nicktator's Demands

First, let me say this: I whole heartily believe Nick Saban is the best college football in the game today. If I'm an athletic director and I'm charged with hiring a new head coach, no matter what the first person I call is Saban to gauge his interest.

With that said, we all know Saban can be tough to work for, coach with and play for. We all know the story of Saban being heard cussing out someone behind closed doors and when the door opened it was his own AD at LSU.

Alabama is ran like a tight ship with Saban and maybe Clowney wants to play for a more loose head coach.

3. Fitting In The 3-4

8 of 10

Clowney plays a normal 4-3, hand down defensive end role right now and that is where he is best suited to play.

While I don't dispute the fact of Clowney is talented enough to play standing up in Alabama's 3-4 scheme and rush with his hand down on sub packages, Clowney isn't best suited for this role.

He's best as a strongside 4-3 end in a 40 front on all 3 downs, and Alabama goes back and forth between a 30 and a 40 front which could hinder Clowney's development.

2. No Regular 40 Front In Tuscaloosa

9 of 10

Clowney has gone on record saying he doesn't like the 3-4 defense. He desires a 40 front where he's down all three downs.

If he goes to Alabama and moves to outside linebacker, then he will be forced to learn how to read formations, adjust to motions, buzz in zones, cover receivers underneath, cover running backs out of the back field and change direction in space.

These are not Clowney's strengths. He's plenty athletic to do these things, no question, yet Clowney is at his best rusher he passer and anchoring against edge runs as he would do so as a 4-3 end.

1. Away From Home

10 of 10

When you read up on Clonwey, a constant factor you keep seeing is geography. Then you notice he has South Carolina, North Carolina and Clemson on his final list.

Alabama isn't far from home, yet Tuscaloosa is far enough for so Clowney can't go get home cookin', do laundry and spend time with his family on the regular.

He's a shy type of guy and staying close to home is very desirable. Alabama made him feel very, very comfortable during his visit, but it can't afford him the comfortable level that matches him going to college close to home.
