Predicting the BCS Top 25 in 2011: Where Will Boise State Rank?

New Year's is here to signal the end of the college football season. Sure, there are a few more bowl games, but the end is near.

With 12 ranked teams still scheduled to play their bowl games, the rankings will be changing quite a bit.

Which teams will be moving up, which will be dropping, and where will Boise State end up?

Read on and be sure to let us know what you think.

25. San Diego State

1 of 25

    Stephen Dunn/Getty Images

    Current Rank: Unranked

Bowl Game Result: 35-14 Win in Poinsettia Bowl over Navy

Why They Are Here: The Aztecs won their first bowl game since the 1969 Pasadena Bowl. They also had nine wins in 2010 and have been a feisty Mountain West team. Led by head coach Brady Hoke, the Aztecs gave undefeated TCU just about all they could handle in a 40-35 loss.

The bowl win over Navy was the cherry on top of a great building season.

24. Northern Illinois

2 of 25

    Current Rank: Unranked

Bowl Game Result: 40-17 Win over Fresno State in Humanitarian Bowl

Why They Are Here: The Northern Illinois Wolfpack have won 11 games and were it not for a loss in the MAC Championship in their last regular season game, they would currently be ranked.

The Wolfpack made short work of a solid Fresno State team. They will be ranked somewhere in the Top 25 when the rankings come out.

23. South Carolina

3 of 25

    Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images

    Current Rank: 20

Bowl Game Result: 26-17 Loss to Florida State in Chick-fil-A Bowl

Why They Are Here: The Gamecocks seemed to get the wind knocked out of their sails in the opening drive when stud freshman Marcus Lattimore was knocked out of the game on a swing pass.

South Carolina drops because of the loss but not enough to drop out of the Top 25.

22. Utah

4 of 25

    Ethan Miller/Getty Images

    Current Rank: 19

Bowl Game Result: 26-3 Loss to Boise State in Las Vegas Bowl

Why They Are Here: Utah was at one point a top-10 team. But after an 8-0 start, the Utes have lost three out of their last five.

A loss to Boise in the bowl game drops the future Pac-12 team, but not too far.

21. Nebraska

5 of 25

    Tom Pennington/Getty Images

    Current Rank: 15

Bowl Game Result: 19-7 Loss to Washington in Holiday Bowl

Why They Are Here: People thought I was crazy when I said that Washington would extract revenge over the Huskers after a terrible loss earlier in the season. However, that is exactly what happened.

Nebraska looked terrible in the Holiday Bowl, and they deserve to drop for it.

20. UCF

6 of 25

    Current Rank: 25

Bowl Game Result: 10-6 Win over Georgia in Liberty Bowl

Why They Are Here: UCF picked up its 11th win of the season in a bowl win over Georgia. The win was the Knights' first bowl win in school history.

Not enough can be said about the job George O'Leary has done at UCF.

19. Texas A&M

7 of 25

    Darren Carroll/Getty Images

    Current Rank: 17

Bowl Game Result: TBD against LSU in Cotton Bowl

Why They Are Here: While anything can happen in a bowl game, LSU seems like a huge favorite to beat Texas A&M in this one.

While any loss will drop A&M, I doubt they drop too much.

18. Florida State

8 of 25

    Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images

    Current Rank: 23

Bowl Game Result: 26-17 Win over South Carolina in Chick-fil-A Bowl

Why They Are Here: Florida State looked ready to stick it to Steve Spurrier in their bowl game. From the opening hit on Marcus Lattimore, it looked like the Seminoles were going to beat anybody they played.

While the win doesn't help them jump into the top 15, it will help them to jump more than anyone else.

17. Mississippi State

9 of 25

    Rick Dole/Getty Images

    Current Rank: 21

Bowl Game Result: 52-14 Win over Michigan in Gator Bowl

Why They Are Here: Mississippi State looks like they might be starting to make a leap in the SEC. With head coach Dan Mullins running the show, it's just a matter of time before the Bulldogs are among the nation's elite teams.

After putting up 52 points against Michigan, it appears that the Gator Bowl was a game where two teams were headed in drastically different directions.

16. Virginia Tech

10 of 25

    Streeter Lecka/Getty Images

    Current Rank: 13

Bowl Game Result: TBD against Stanford in Orange Bowl

Why They Are Here: I know the Hokies have not played their bowl game yet, but I think Stanford wins this one fairly easily.

If Va Tech loses, they will drop out of the top 15.

15. Missouri

11 of 25

    Christian Petersen/Getty Images

    Current Rank: 12

Bowl Game Result: 27-24 Loss to Iowa in Insight Bowl

Why They Are Here: Missouri has been an under-the-radar team for much of the season. However, they failed to make a statement in the Insight Bowl against an underperforming Iowa team.

Because of the loss, the Tigers drop slightly.

14. Michigan State

12 of 25

    Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images

    Current Rank: 9

Bowl Game Result: 49-7 Loss to Alabama in Capital One Bowl

Why They Are Here: Michigan State has to be embarrassed by the effort they put forth against Alabama. For a team that thought they deserved a chance to play in a BCS bowl, the Spartans really looked terrible.

If I am an MSU fan, I am very disappointed by my team.

13. Nevada

13 of 25

    Jamie Squire/Getty Images

    Current Rank: 15

Bowl Game Result: TBD against Boston College in Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl

Why They Are Here: Nevada's pistol offense has been one of the breakout stars of the college football season. In just about every game, the modified shotgun formation shows up.

Boston College will not stop Colin Kaepernick, and as a result, Nevada will rise in the rankings.

12. Alabama

14 of 25

    Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images

    Current Rank: 16

Bowl Game Result: 49-7 Win over Michigan State in Capital One Bowl

Why They Are Here: Alabama may have had a disappointing season this year in defending their championship, but they came out in the Capital One Bowl with something to prove against a top-10 team.

With the win, the Crimson Tide make a pretty big leap.

11. Oklahoma State

15 of 25

    Tom Pennington/Getty Images

    Current Rank: 14

Bowl Game Result: 36-10 Win over Arizona in Alamo Bowl

Why They Are Here: The Cowboys looked like a team that wanted to prove themselves in the Alamo Bowl. Oklahoma State absolutely beat up on a reeling Arizona team that had lost five in a row.

With the win, the Cowboys move up but are just outside the top 10.

10. LSU

16 of 25

    Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images

    Current Rank: 11

Bowl Game Result: TBD against Texas A&M in Cotton Bowl

Why They Are Here: LSU has gotten to the place they are in now with smoke and mirrors. However, this team still has more than enough talent to win the Cotton Bowl pretty easily.

With the win, the LSU jumps back up into the top 10. They don't jump a lot after what will be a close bowl game, but it's enough.

9. Ohio State

17 of 25

    Jamie Sabau/Getty Images

    Current Rank: 6

Bowl Game Result: TBD against Arkansas in Sugar Bowl

Why They Are Here: I think the player suspensions will be a distraction to one of the three Big Ten champs. Even though the players get to play in the Sugar Bowl, the SEC has been looking good so far in the bowl season, and the Big Ten hasn't.

With the loss, the Buckeyes drop, but not out of the top 10.

8. Boise State

18 of 25

    Ethan Miller/Getty Images

    Current Rank: 10

Bowl Game Result: 26-3 Win over Utah in Las Vegas Bowl

Why They Are Here: Boise State reenters the Top 10 after a loss to Nevada ended their perfect season. After a big win over Utah, the Broncos are sure to move up.

I thought they would not play with much fire after being upset by the Wolfpack. I thought wrong.

7. Wisconsin

19 of 25

    Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images

    Current Rank: 5

Bowl Game Result: 21-19 Loss to TCU in Rose Bowl

Why They Are Here: After a close loss to TCU in the Rose Bowl, the Badgers became the latest Big Ten team to fail in a bowl game this year.

Wisconsin's loss has got to sting for a team that thought they were amongst the best in the country.

6. Arkansas

20 of 25

    Streeter Lecka/Getty Images

    Current Rank: 8

Bowl Game Result: TBD against Ohio State in Sugar Bowl

Why They Are Here: The SEC is playing great so far in the bowl season, and the Big Ten is not. Arkansas will be able to score points on the Buckeyes, and with a win, they will have a BCS win.

With the win, the Razorbacks will jump slightly, but they won't have done enough to pass some of the other winners in the bowl season.

5. Oklahoma

21 of 25

    Ronald Martinez/Getty Images

    Current Rank: 7

Bowl Game Result: TBD against UConn in Fiesta Bowl

Why They Are Here: Oklahoma seems to have lucked out with the only unranked opponent in the BCS this year. Obviously, there is a chance UConn could beat a Sooners team that has struggled in big games over the past few years, but I don't think that is the case here.

With the win, the Sooners leap into the Top Five.

4. Stanford

22 of 25

    Ezra Shaw/Getty Images

    Current Rank: 4

Bowl Game Result: TBD against Virginia Tech in Orange Bowl

Why They Are Here: It's a shame the Stanford Cardinal have to travel all the way across the country for their chance at a BCS bowl game. However, the Cardinal seem like the type of team that doesn't really care when or where they will play.

After Stanford beats up on Virginia Tech, they will stay where they are because of what happens ahead of them.

3. Auburn

23 of 25

    Mike Zarrilli/Getty Images

    Current Rank: 1

Bowl Game Result: TBD against Oregon in BCS National Championship

Why They Are Here: Believe it. Oregon is going to beat Auburn and because of the TCU win, the Tigers drop all the way to three.

I know I have been singing the SEC praises, but I just think there is too much the Tigers are going to have to overcome to win a championship.

2. TCU

24 of 25

    Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images

    Current Rank: 3

Bowl Game Result: 21-19 Win over Wisconsin in Rose Bowl

Why They Are Here: After watching TCU win a physical game against Wisconsin, I really think they could hang with both Auburn and Oregon. It's times like this that I wish we had a playoff in college football.

Because of the Rose Bowl win, the Horned Frogs jump past the loser of the BCS Championship game. I also think they could get some AP votes as the top team.

1. Oregon

25 of 25

    Steve Dykes/Getty Images

    Current Rank: 2

Bowl Game Result: TBD against Auburn in BCS Championship

Why They Are Here: After a win in the BCS Championship, the Ducks will be the top team in the country. Their offense will be just too much for Auburn to stop, and the game will be a high-scoring affair.
