BYU Football Breaking News: Why Bronco Mendenhall Will Make Coaching Changes

Ryan TeeplesDec 21, 2010

It happens less often at BYU than other places. But even in Provo, college football has a business angle which cannot be ignored. And if BYU is going to be a national darling (and maybe even the next Boise State) change may be necessary.

And from that angle, we're likely looking at coaching changes among the Cougar staff shortly, according to a variety of reports and rumors. More on that in another article.

Why Is Bronco Ready To Make Coaching Moves?

This article sets out to answer this question: Why is Bronco Mendenhall looking to make coaching changes when the Cougars appear to have righted the ship?

What's the impetus here for Bronco to make changes beyond his placement of himself as defensive coordinator midseason?

Bronco Learned Hands-on Is Key at BYU

Bronco's self-appointment to DC is actually likely a reason he seeks changes on the other side of the ball. Bronco learned, and we all were witness to, the fact that when coaches were engaged with players daily on a practice, personal and even academic level, positive results were seen on Saturday.

We saw a downright awful defense turn into an unpredictable, well-schemed unit that was formidable and got key stops and turnovers. All after Bronco got involved.

Bronco now wants to see that from his current coaching staff on the offensive side of the ball. The problem is, Robert Anae isn't that kind of coach.

The Utah Game Brought Dissension To Light

Jason Franchuk, one of a few bright spots at Utah County's Daily Herald said on Utah talk radio yesterday that the 4th-and-1 call in The Rivalry Game brought a variety of opinions and raised issues that have given Bronco pause.

I'm not sure what side of the fence each of the players were on relative to the awful call which ultimately lost BYU that game, but the fact that they all weren't on the same page indicates there is some kind of change needed.

Whether that change is in the form of better unity, or a change of personnel is yet to be seen. My guess is Anae and QB coach Brandon Doman disagreed on what the call should be.

Speaking of Brandon Doman, He's a Hot Commodity

In the same category as former Cougar Steve Sarkisian, Brandon Doman is seen as a rising star in the coaching ranks and could probably find a job as an offensive coordinator in the next couple years.

Bronco hasn't kept it secret that he loves Doman and sees him as an amazing coach with a great future.

And by all counts he's a real closer when it comes to recruiting, and has a charisma BYU hasn't seen at OC in decades. Most importantly, all indications are he would have a similar approach with the offense that Bronco has with the D: Hands-on interaction and personal relationship with each player.

There's a sense in Provo that if BYU wants to keep Doman on staff, they'll need to promote him straightway.

Changes Are Coming Either Way

Regardless the reason, it's safe to say the times they are a changin' in Provo.

And if the results are similar to what we got from the defense this year, sign me up.
