According to ESPN.com, Florida head football coach Urban Meyer has resigned. A news conference is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday.
Meyer will coach the bowl game against Penn State in the Outback Bowl, and that will be his last game.
The Gators finished the season 7-5 overall and 4-4 in the SEC. He won two national championships at Florida and went 64-15 in six seasons.
"I fully grasp the sacrifices my 24/7 profession has demanded of me, and I know it is time to put my focus on my family and life away from the field," Meyer said.
He also said, "I will profoundly miss coming to campus every day to coach this team, but I will always be a Gator at heart."
Looking back at Meyer, he was the one of the best college coaches and did wonders at Florida. He developed a lot players into now NFL players, won championships and made sure his team performed at a high level when he was coaching.
Tim Tebow, Percy Harvin, Brandon Spikes, Chris Leak, Reggie Nelson and Maurice Pouncey are a few players Meyer produced at Florida that are now in the NFL or that succeeded in Meyer's tenure while at Florida. The only thing that went bad in his tenure at Florida is he had a lot of players get in trouble with the law.
However, he did always discipline them for their troubles.
Do you think Meyer will be back next year at Florida, or resigned for good?
Now, what does the Meyer resigning mean for the Gators? Plus, do you believe that it is true, or do you think, just like last year, he will be back on the sidelines in 2011 for the Gators?
Last year, he said he was resigning to regain better health and a better lifestyle. This year, he cites he wants to get closer to his family,
I don't know how much we should put into this, considering he came back for this season. I guess we'll just have to wait for his press conference later tonight to learn more.
For the Gators, they are losing a great coach and leader. He has a great football mind, offensively and defensively, and if this is true, he will be missed for sure on the campus of the University of Florida.
One other thing crossed my mind as I saw this on ESPN.com: The Denver Broncos just fired Josh McDaniels, and his quarterback, Tim Tebow, does happen to play for the Broncos.
Is he really stepping down from Florida for personal reasons, or might he have interest in the Broncos head coaching position. I guess only time will tell, right?
I could very well see that he may have interest in the Broncos coaching job because he developed Tebow into a top quarterback in college. However, he might be serious in leaving because he wants to spend more time with his family. He has showed throughout the years that his family is important to him.
As for the Broncos, would they pursue Meyer?
Possibly, especially since Tebow is there. It's all speculation now, and just an idea that might happen in the near future.
For now, what do you think? Do you think Urban Meyer is stepping down from football, or might he pursue a job in the NFL, like with the Broncos, and be reunited with Tim Tebow?
