Auburn Football: Cam Newton Ruled (In)Eligible by NCAA

Tyler McAdamsDec 1, 2010

The NCAA has ruled that Cam Newton is eligible to play football for the Auburn Tigers just one day after he was ruled ineligible.

This is from a statement released by the NCAA:

"Based on the information available to the reinstatement staff at this time, we do not have sufficient evidence that Cam Newton, or anyone from Auburn, was aware of this activity, which led to his reinstatement," said Kevin Lennon, NCAA vice president for academic and membership affairs.

"From a student-athlete reinstatement perspective, Auburn University met its obligation...Under this threshold, the student-athlete has not participated while ineligible." (via this article)

Key words: "at this time"

This is great news for Auburn and Cam Newton. The football team can at least stop looking over their shoulder, but the investigation is clearly not over.

Someone has to pay for this; someone has to be punished.

Otherwise, you're setting a very troubling precedent. Athletes will continue to get paid and just claim they didn't know anything was going on.

The NCAA is protecting their own interests here. Cam Newton and Auburn equal money to the NCAA.

This ensures that they will get the big money if Auburn makes it to Glendale.

So for now, Cam Newton and Auburn are safe. But don't assume that the Tigers are out of the woods just yet.
