Could It Get Any Crazier?

    Last years college football season took the cake.  I can’t remember a more memorable season of NCAA football.  I thought Boise State upsetting Oklahoma two years ago was a big deal…..not compared to last year. Let’s take a look back.

    Week one Appalachian State comes into the Big House and shocks Michigan by blocking a field goal and walking out with a 34-32 victory to set the tone for a crazy season of college football.  Through late October there were too many upsets to count including Kentucky upsetting then number one LSU in three overtimes, Stanford upsetting then number two USC 24-23 and Colorado beating Oklahoma just to name a few.

    Let’s fast forward to November where things get really interesting.  Ohio State holds the number one position until Illinois marches into the Horseshoe and hands OSU their first loss of the season.  LSU assumes the number one slot again before being knocked off….again by Darren McFadden and the Razorbacks in three OT’s.  Meanwhile Oklahoma’s National Championship hopes are shaping up nicely until Graham Harrell and Texas Tech spank OU for their second loss of the year.  Oregon looks to be headed to a BCS game before star QB Dennis Dixon goes down with an injury.  Kind of the same story with West Virginia.  WV heads into the last week of college football with only one loss and playing Pitt in the Backyard Brawl.  Pat White goes down midway through the game and WV watch their National Championship dreams go down the drain as Pitt walks away with a 13-9 victory.

    Bowl season. Of course there is controversy when the BCS selects Kansas to play in the Orange Bowl instead of Missouri who beat Kansas in the final week of the season.  Also the National Championship consists of a) the first two loss team to play in a National Championship and b) a one loss team that didn’t beat anyone in the AP top 20 during the season.  LSU eventually wins the National Championship and Georgia destroys once undefeated Hawaii.

    All that said, how could this year ever mount up to what last year turned out to be.  A season where the number one team changed six times and the number two team changed 10 times.  I don’t know how this year is going to match last year but I sure hope it does.
