The Most Common Topics of the 2008 College Football Season
Yogi Berra once said, “It feels like deja vu all over again.” Now I know what he meant.
It seems every time I scan the Internet or pick up a magazine off the rack, it's the same story in regards to previewing the college football season. While there are a slew of new and creative writers out there, and the Internet has never been easier to access, it still stuns me that I read the same articles not just every day, but sometimes several times a day.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion (if they have one), but I’m not so sure the rest of us want to hear them talking about someone else’s opinion as if they’re telling us something new.
As someone who writes about the game, I can assure you that writing about a sport that isn’t being played right now and has nothing really going on but practice can make it difficult to come up with material.
I’m not a reporter, so you usually aren’t going to hear me talk about a breaking story I act like you don’t know about, even though it’s on every website with single or double digit Alexa Rankings and every major news channel. That just not what Miami Mitch’s Place is all about. We’re just about getting real.
I say some things that end up backfiring on me from time to time—sometimes even more often than that. I thought Miami could compete on the same field with Oklahoma last year, I thought Chad Henne was a horrible pick by the Dolphins (wow, was I wrong), I picked Northwestern to beat Duke—and well, let's just say I’m not right all the time.
Those of you who have received my newsletter in the past know that while I make mistakes, I write about them as well. In fact, if you’ve read my stuff, you’ll be expecting to hear about it the day or two after the first set of games completes (though it's a little tricky with the Monday games and my regular picks coming out on Tuesdays, I’ll figure it out). For the rest of you, there’s a hint as to what’s coming.
As for the rest of the writers and aspiring writers out there, I hope you can write just as much about how your preseason articles were wrong as I do. I’m guessing that if you do, these will be the most popular topics discussed during the season.
Clemson are either major underachievers, or this Bowden guy just stinks: I’m pretty sure it's both.
The Big 12 loses a lot of meaningful games: Since they don’t go for the ranked guys out of conference too often, these are often confused with upsets.
Wow, those preseason polls weren’t even close: They rarely are.
Miami Mitch has the best all-free game picks available: You know it's true.
I think Brent Musburger wants to marry Jim Tressel: At least that’s what it sounded like he said.
I know USC is good, but Pete Carroll gets on my nerves a little: Ya think?
The BCS doesn’t work: I know I read this one every day during the offseason, but we need to continue hearing about it until something changes.
I miss the Horse Collar: At least they didn’t bring back the "Halo Rule."
Charlie Weis isn’t going to make the Irish a winner: And we’re all so upset about it.
Pat White is the best college QB in the country: No offense, Chase Daniel and Tim Tebow, but what is everyone missing?
Officiating is even worse than last year: Becoming as annual a happening as Thanksgiving.
Georgia’s schedule is just too tough: Duh.
It seems like Iowa plays Northwestern every week, and it's always on ESPN: It feels that way sometimes.
I can’t get Gameplan, 360, ESPNU, or Vs.: Thankfully I’m set this, year but why is it always a fire drill? I just want to watch the games I want to see.
I’m sure there’s plenty more out there—let’s get things rolling.
