College Football Rankings: Who Is Overrated in Week 8 Coaches' and AP Polls?
Guess what? Another No. 1 team went down on Saturday, making it three weeks in a row.
This weekend, it was a BCS No, 1 team—Oklahoma—that fell from the highest spot in the rankings. The consensus AP and coaches' choice for No. 1—Oregon Ducks—however, continued to roll with a win.
But just like we do every Sunday, it's time to look at who's overrated in the newly released rankings.
Here are teams that are getting too much love on the Week 8 AP and coaches' poll.
10. TCU Horned Frogs
1 of 10
Ranking TCU over Michigan State on both the AP and coaches' polls has to be a oversight.
MSU has defeated both Wisconsin and Michigan this season, who were ranked No. 11 and 18, respectively, on the media poll.
While TCU has only downed Oregon State in a very close game, 30-21, during the first week of the season.
As of today, the Spartans are the only undefeated team out of the Big Ten with a 8-0 season.
That accomplishment alone should be able to catapult them over the Horned Frogs, who share a similar 8-0 record but have not played as many quality opponents as Michigan State.
9. Utah Utes
2 of 10
For Utah, their only big win this season came against a Pittsburgh team that's no longer ranked among the Top 25.
Mizz, on the other hand, has just made a strong case to be considered the best team in the Big 12 by defeating the BCS No. 1 team, Oklahoma Sooners 36-27.
But Utah is still ranked above them on the coaches' poll? That doesn't sound fair, and it only makes Utah slightly overrated in the coaches' perspective.
At least the media got it right by putting Missouri above Utah in their poll.
8. Florida State Seminoles
3 of 10
Florida State is overrated because they remain ranked over Arizona on the coaches' poll.
Even after Arizona's big win against Washington on Saturday, 44-14, they did not gain any ground on the Seminoles, who took the week off with a bye.
Arizona has under their belt a big win against a Big Ten powerhouse in the Iowa Hawkeyes, while Florida State has a win against a Miami (Fla.) team that has not shown an ability to defeat top-ranked opponents.
The Seminoles are also just one weekend removed from nearly losing to Boston College, 24-19.
The AP has it correct—Arizona should be ranked above Florida State.
7. Michigan Wolverines
4 of 10
A day after their bye week, Michigan is suddenly back in the Top 25 in the coaches' poll.
That sounds like a complete oversight. Or more like, a lot of love directed towards Denard Robinson.
How does Michigan make it back to the top 25 in coaches' poll after taking two straight losses this season?
Granted, those losses came against top-ranked Michigan State and Iowa. But the fact remains, Michigan still hasn't won a game since Oct. 2 and shouldn't make it back to the Top 25 until they actually win a game again.
6. Nebraska Cornhuskers
5 of 10
Nebraska is ranked a little too high on the coaches' poll.
Because the LSU Tigers are ranked behind the 'Huskers.
On Saturday, LSU lost to a very good Auburn team ranked no. 5 on the previous USAToday poll and No. 4 on the BCS standings.
But somehow after that loss, they all of a sudden fall behind Nebraska on the coaches' poll.
Nebraska's only loss this season came against a Texas team who was unranked and also fell to a Iowa State this weekend. The fact that they fell to a much inferior team in Texas, does not earn them the right to be ranked above LSU.
5. Stanford Cardinal
6 of 10
Stanford is overrated because they remain ranked over Arizona on both polls.
Both Pac-10 teams have identical 6-1 records. Arizona's lone loss came against a tough Oregon State squad that has been in-and-out of the Top 25 this season, while Stanford's only loss was to the Oregon Ducks, who's rolled through every single opponent this year.
The biggest difference here is that Arizona actually took down a top-ranked Big Ten powerhouse in the Iowa Hawkeyes, while Stanford has yet to earn a win against a top-ranked team.
Stanford also has a near-loss to USC and just held on for a win against Washington State this weekend, 38-28. The same Washington State team that the Wildcats defeated in a more decisive fashion 24-7.
4. Iowa Hawkeyes
7 of 10
Iowa is overrated on the AP Poll because they are ranked over Arkansas.
When you break it down, the Razorbacks' two losses this year have come against two Top 10 teams in former No. 1 Alabama and the SEC's only undefeated team in Auburn.
Whereas, Iowa's two losses have come against Arizona and Wisconsin. Arizona and Wisconsin have not been ranked as high as Alabama and Auburn this season.
The coaches got this one right by putting the Hogs over the Hawkeyes.
3. USC Trojans
8 of 10
The USC Trojans are overrated on the AP Poll because of the fact that they're suddenly back in the Top 25 after doing very little.
USC first fell out of the rankings with a loss to unranked Washington at the beginning of October and then suffered another loss to Stanford.
Last weekend, they finally earned a win against the California Bears with a 48-14 victory. But that didn't immediately earn them back a spot in the Top 25.
Now that they've taken a week off from playing, the media saw it fit to rank them No. 24 on their poll.
Hmm.
2. Miami Hurricanes
9 of 10
Last week, Mississippi State saw themselves ranked above Miami (Fla.) last week in both the coaches' and AP polls.
This week after they each earned a win, Miami (Fla.) somehow overtook them in the rankings.
That ranking suddenly makes them overrated.
Miami (Fla.) defeated unranked North Carolina and Mississippi State and came away with a close win against unranked UAB.
Miami (Fla.) has lost to every single top-ranked team they've played this season in Florida State and Ohio State, while Mississippi State is just a week removed from defeating top-ranked Florida.
1. Boise State Broncos
10 of 10
Boise has been sitting pretty this weekend with a Tuesday game that they still need to play against Louisiana Tech. But Auburn has kept working.
On Saturday, they took the reins as the only undefeated team in the SEC by defeating the LSU Tigers, who were ranked No. 6 on the polls last week.
No offense to Boise State, but this was the week Auburn should have passed them on the polls.
Boise State may have beaten Pac-10's Oregon State and the ACC's Virginia Tech but Auburn has already played and defeated tough in-conference opponents in Arkansas, South Carolina and LSU.
An undefeated team out of the SEC should rank higher than an undefeated team out of the WAC.
It's that simple.
