USC Recruiting: Charles Burks' Commitment and Other News

Rick McMahanOct 13, 2010

Clearing out the notebook while I was away...

On Oct. 11, the Trojans picked up a big verbal when Charles Burks, the 6-foot-1, 230-pound defensive end/linebacker from Huntington Beach, Calif., gave the Trojans his pledge to come play for the cardinal and gold.

Rated a three-star prospect by Scout.com, Burks is having a big senior year following a junior campaign where he registered 14 sacks for his Edison High School team, which made it to the state championship game in its division.

Initially, Burks was offered a USC scholarship on the condition he would be able to enroll early, and thus not cost the Trojans one of their precious few scholarships.

Unfortunately for the Trojans, Burks was unable to meet the criteria for early enrollment, but was told by USC coach Ed Orgeron that the offer stood anyway.

Burks jumped at that opportunity, and will now be a Trojan.

In other news, USC has also offered Devonte Wilson, a 6-foot-3, 215-pound defensive end from Corona, Calif.

Wilson, also rated a three-star prospect by Scout.com, is exceptionally athletic and will likely be moved to outside linebacker in college.

In addition to the USC offer, Wilson holds offers from Nebraska and most of the other Pac-10 teams, and lists them all as "medium" in terms of his interest.

With an abundance of quality defensive ends on the market, the Trojans have also extended an offer to Xzavier Dickson from Griffin High School in Georgia.

Dickson, rated a four-star prospect by Scout.com, has good size (6'4", 248 lbs.) to go along with outstanding athleticism.

Unfortunately for the Trojans, Dickson has USC low on his interest list, so chances are he will wind up elsewhere, probably in an SEC school.

Meanwhile, another tight end/wide receiver hybrid has received an offer from the Trojans.

Junior Pomee, from Rancho Verde High School in Moreno Valley, Calif., and who is rated a four-star prospect by Scout.com, probably won't sign with the Trojans, whom he has rated as "low" on his interest list.

Instead, look for Pomee to sign with either Florida or UCLA.

Finally, the Trojans have extended offers to more 2012 prospects, and these future prep stars will be the focus of my next recruiting piece.
