Notre Dame Recruiting 2011: Q & A With Future Tight End, Ben Koyack

Collin O'ConnorCorrespondent IAugust 28, 2010

I'd like to begin by thanking Ben Koyack for taking the time out of his busy schedule to answer these questions for me. He is the sixth rated player at his position in the nation for the 2011 class and is committed to Notre Dame.

Standing at 6'5'' and weighing 228 lbs., Koyack has the frame and athletic ability to be able to go and get balls that other tight ends might not be able to get to.

He has hands, body control, and ability to go get the ball out of the air. He looks to be a sure fire tight end coming into a team that is stacked at the position. Add another great one to the list, Notre Dame fans.

First off, when did you know you could be a division one football player?

BK: After my first camp at Pitt, I had two offers before I had ever started a game at tight end. That kind of made me realize it.

What initially drew you to Notre Dame?

BK: It was always a place I had interest in. Just in the beginning, they didn't seem to have much interest in me. So when Coach Kelly came in, and they offered, I looked into them more, and everything just seemed to fit.

What makes them different from the other schools you considered?

BK: There was just so much tradition there. And like I said, from the beginning, I had always been interested in them.

What have the coaches told you about how you will fit into the system?

BK: They've told me the tight ends are very active in the passing and the running game, and that I'm a good fit for both.

Did Notre Dame's academics have an effect on your interest in them?

BK: Definitely. A degree from Notre Dame will get you a job anywhere.

Any ideas as to what you might major in?

BK: Maybe Psychology.

Not that you would mention names or details, but was there a lot of negative recruiting against Notre Dame?

BK: Yeah, there always is when other schools want you. but I didn't focus on that.

Have you had the chance to talk to any current Irish players?

BK: Yeah, we're all friends on Facebook, and we talk a lot about hanging out and everything once we're all on campus.

What do you think about the direction of the program?

BK: I definitely think it's moving forward.

Does the competition at tight end concern you, or is it something you look forward to?

BK: It's not something I'm focused on at the moment. I'm more concerned making sure I'm the best player I can be right now.

What are you individual goals going into this coming season?

BK: Be more aggressive on both sides of the ball, as well as be a better leader. My team is very talented, but can come out flat. I need to be able to rally them up and get going.

Do you already have games targeted to see Notre Dame play this year?

BK: Not really, but I plan on watching them a lot this year.

Finally, what was your favorite part of the recruiting process?

BK: Getting to see some schools, and just the stuff I got to do. Like, on a visit to OSU, my hotel was across the street from Quaker Steak & Lube, so that was a very fun visit. And I was able to take some friends to different schools, so I was glad I was able to do that too.
