Tennessee Volunteers Football

Progress, Progress, Progress (by Bo Fawbush)

I, for one, am glad Lane Kiffin & his “Trojan Mafia” hi-tailed it out of K-Town & headed back West.  I was not excited by the hire even at the time.  I was convinced (and still am) that the Vols should have hired Brian Kelly.  That man can C-O-A-C-H! (See Tony Pike going down in ’09, only to be replaced by Zach Collaros & the Bearcats never missing a beat).

 But I digress…

Derek Dooley is now manning the ship in Knoxville, and I am intrigued.  Dooley worked under a tyrant named Saban for 7 years and was neither scared away, nor chased away.  Dooley seems to emphasize fundamentals, attention to detail, and the kicking game—all of which were missing under Fulmer’s regime.  Yet, he seems to be a man of character, someone who I could genuinely root for & be proud to call my coach.

One thing I DID appreciate about Kiffin (though I don’t know if he deserves the credit) was the way Jonathan Crompton was completely rejuvenated mid-season last year.  He was probably playing the best of any QB in the SEC towards the later part of the season. Crompton was totally shell-shocked early on and got up off the mat to finish strong.

Point for Laney on that maneuver.

Listen, I know the Vols are going to have a ROUGH year in 2010,  but what I want to see is this—can these Vols, under Derek Dooley, make progress between UT-Martin & the Wildcats of Kentucky? Can they get up off the mat and maybe steal a game from Georgia, LSU, or South Carolina?  Can they stay on the same field with Florida or Alabama? Or will they crumble, whine, and be embarrassed like they were at home against Wyoming in 2008.

I think Dooley is the man for the job.  I think Vol fans will see progress, and I believe they will be a well-coached team.  I hope so. I pray so.

I especially pray that 3 years from now Tennessee is not still trying to find that winning combination…

…while the Kelly-coached Golden Domers are lifting the AFCA Waterford Crystal over their collective heads…

But I digress…
