He Looks Awfully Small...
He Looks Awfully Small... four-star recruit Philip Ely has committed to join the Alabama football program in 2011; whether or not he will fit in remains uncertain.

Among Ely's top schools of choice were LSU, Clemson, Wake Forrest and Ole Miss, so it was quite a surprise to many when he accepted an offer from the 2009 BCS Champion Alabama.

Although the 15th ranked QB in the nation had been very quiet about his recruiting, many believed that Phillip Ely would choose LSU.

When asked about his stunning decision, Ely had this to say: "You want to play for a program like that because they are the champions.  The coaches and players there understand what it takes to win."

Ely certainly knows about winning.  As a junior in high school he threw for 1,833 yards and 20 touchdowns.  He is 19-0 as a starter.

Does Greg McElroy come to mind?

Although Ely currently plays in a spread offense, I don't see why he would have any trouble adjusting to Nick Saban's Pro-Style offense.

Ely was selected as "The Best Fit in Any System" at the Elite 11 QB camp in Aliso Viejo, CA., but he failed to receive any of the top awards such as Best Touch, Best Deep Ball, Most Accurate, etc.

And our own Lisa Horne watched him for four days at this camp, and said she was not impressed.

This raises questions as to whether or not Ely will be able to find a home at Alabama.

Star Jackson was also one of the top QB recruits in the nation when he accepted an offer to play football at Alabama.  As we all know, he failed to impress the coaches, and has now transferred to Georgia State.

I guess we will have to wait and see just how good Ely really is.  Lord knows he has a lot of ground to cover; ahead of him is undefeated starter Greg McElroy, and the phenom from St. Paul A.J. McCarron.
