LSU Fans Wait as Dual-Sport Star Zach Lee Hears Offers from Dodgers

Brett StephenAug 16, 2010

LSU Head Coach Les Miles sure has a lot of great things to say about freshman quarterback and first round draft choice of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Zach Lee.

Lee is currently being wooed by the Dodgers, who have until midnight tonight to sign him to a contract.

Lee is turning heads at LSU practice, however, and is looking more and more like he will be able to challenge incumbent quarterback Jordan Jefferson for some playing time sooner rather than later.

Miles has made several comments about Lee’s abilities and his chances of challenging for the starting position.

"He's one of those men who really expects himself to learn it and compete to learn it," Miles said. "He's in it. He's been in it."

Ultimately, the decision to play college football or take the professional baseball money and run is up to Lee.  But as with every big decision, there are big influences working.

The Dodgers are almost certainly going to throw some big numbers at Lee before the midnight deadline, but Miles is throwing his influence as well.

Miles has redshirted freshmen quarterbacks in the past, including Jarrett Lee, but when asked if he is planning to redshirt Zach Lee, his response was “Nooo.”

“He came right in, is picking it up, understands it and is very bright." Miles said.

Lee has definitely impressed everyone, not just Miles.  He has made sharp, accurate throws and has drawn attention with his work ethic.

Lee has been working hard to learn the playbook and establish chemistry with his receivers.

“He’s pretty good,” said senior wide receiver Terrance Toliver, who has already worked with Lee quite a bit. “He’s smart. He already knows the playbook well. I threw with him a few times after we’d finish working out just to see where he’s at. And he’s all over it. He’s pretty good. He’s got a strong arm.”

Zach Lee could be the solid presence at quarterback that the Tigers have lacked for several years now, even as a true freshmen.

Jordan Jefferson will start the season as the LSU signal caller, but the presence of a guy like Lee makes his leash a lot shorter.

So until midnight, Tiger fans can hold their breath and hope that the mystique of playing in Tiger Stadium on Saturday nights means more to Lee than the tons of money that the Dodgers will be throwing at him.
