2010 Georgia Bulldogs Season Preview
Hello Bulldog nation! Since the 2010 college football season is rapidly approaching, I thought it would be appropriate if I gave you an in-depth preview on what we can expect to see from the Bulldogs this season.
Schedule
2009 proved to be a disappointing season for the Bulldogs as they finished the regular season going 8-5. That was good enough for a trip to play Texas A&M in the Independence Bowl where Georgia would finish the season on a good note by defeating the Aggies 44-20.
The Bulldogs had a tough schedule last year as they lost to very talented teams like LSU, Florida, and Oklahoma State.
This year, the schedule for the Bulldogs is very favorable as they start off the season with a matchup against Louisiana-Lafayette at home. They will then go on the road to face the Gamecocks and head coach Steve Spurrier at South Carolina. The Bulldogs will then have three games at home and three on the road before they head to Jacksonville to face arguably their toughest opponent this year, the Florida Gators (Georgia is the home team this year).
Prediction
This year I think the Bulldogs could finish as well as 11-1 or as bad as 8-4. Given that this year's schedule is very favorable, I would have to say that the Bulldogs finish the regular season 9-3. I think that Georgia will lose a tough game to Tennessee and unfortunately lose to Florida, although I think this year's game will be much closer than last year's 41-17 blowout. I also think Georgia Tech will stun the Bulldogs at home during their final regular season game.
Coaching Changes
The biggest coaching change this year was the firing of Defensive Coordinator Willie Martinez. Last year Georgia's defense was definitely the team's weak spot and the Georgia staff feels like they addressed this problem by firing Willie Martinez and bringing in new Defensive Coordinator Todd Grantham. Grantham will be bringing a new 3-4 defensive scheme to the Bulldogs this year in hopes to make the defense into a deadly weapon.
Depth Chart
Here is the depth chart according to rivals.com (notes on new players below the depth chart).
Offense: QB Aaron Murray, RB Washaun Ealey, FB Shaun Chapas, WR A.J. Green, WR Tavarres King, TE Orson Charles, LT Clint Boling, LG Cordy Glenn, C Ben Jones, RG Chris Davis, RT Josh Davis.
Defense: DE Abry Jones, NT DeAngelo Tyson, DE Demarcus Dobbs, LB Justin Houston, LB Christian Robertson, LB Akeem Dent, LB Cornelius Washington, CB Brandon Boykin, CB Vance Cuff, SS Nick Williams, FS Bacarri Rambo.
Special Teams: K Blair Walsh, P Drew Butler, PR Brandon Boykin, KR Brandon Boykin and Branden Smith.
Offensive Notes
Freshman Aaron Murray takes over at QB this year with an experienced offensive line in front of him. Sophomore RB Washaun Ealey will look to improve on a nice Freshman year (team high 717 yards & three TD's), and 6'5" Wide Out A.J. Green will look to stay healthy and be one of Aaron Murray's biggest weapons.
Defensive Notes
The Bulldogs lost two of their biggest leaders on defense this year in MLB Rennie Curran and S Reshad Jones. But the future looks bright as S Baccari Rambo looks to replace Jones, while Senior LB Akeem Dent looks to be the leader on defense this year.
Special Teams Notes
Explosive punt and kick returner Brandon Boykin looks to have another great season like he did last year when he returned three kickoffs for touchdowns. Kicker Blair will try to have another fine season as he was 20-22 on field goals last year and Ray Guy Award winner Drew Butler will be punting once again for the Bulldogs this year.
This season looks very promising for the Bulldogs. If everything goes well, they could be BCS bowl bound or even get a shot to play for the national championship. Until next time... Go Dawgs!
