Giants' Chad Jones Moved To New York For More Surgery

Brett StephenJun 30, 2010

Former Louisiana State University two-sport superstar Chad Jones was transferred to a New York medical center Tuesday to undergo additional surgery after crashing his Range Rover last week.

Toxicology reports determined that Jones was not under the influence of drugs and that alcohol was not a factor in the accident.

The rookie safety was moved to New York Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornell Medical Center by the New York Giants to repair fractures to his left leg and ankle.

Jones underwent over eight hours of surgery Friday at LSU Public Hospital in New Orleans to improve blood flow to his left foot.

Jones' tibia and fibula were shattered and he suffered a gash in his left thigh along with artery and nerve damage.

According to Jones’ agent Rocky Arceneaux, “It could have been a lot worse.”

"The doctors were worried that he might lose his left foot."

"I think he should be able to walk again and run again based on the type of athlete Chad is."

Jones is one of two players to have won NCAA National Titles in baseball and football while at LSU.

Former Tiger Jared Mitchell is the other.

Jones and Mitchell participated on LSU’s National Championship football and baseball teams before pursuing professional careers in the NFL and MLB respectively.

Jones was the 3rd round pick of the New York Giants and also the 13th round selection by the Houston Astros.

His NFL future is certainly in question after the accident, but his spirit will never be in question.

Jones is a fighter and a leader and if anyone can make their way back from an injury as serious as this, its him.

His will and determination made him a fan and team favorite in Baton Rouge.

Who can forget his dominating pitching performance against Texas that helped the Tiger baseball team complete their National Title run.

And who can forget his miraculous performance against Mississippi State in 2009 in which he returned a punt 93 yards for a touchdown and then batted down a ball on a goal line stand to clinch the victory for the Tigers.

To put it mildly, Jones is an LSU legend.

Regardless of his future in the NFL or MLB, Jones will always be remembered by Tiger fans and respected for all of the hard work and leadership that he gave to the university and athletic department.

The thoughts and prayers of the LSU Tiger faithful are with Jones and his family as he begins his road to recovery.
