USC RB Dillon Baxter Accuses Five Schools of Illegal Phone Contact
USC frosh freshman Dillon Baxter performed incredibly well during the Trojans' spring practice. Now he's making some noise off the field.
ESPN's Joe Schad has tweeted that Baxter informed the school's 'compliance department' that five schools illegally contacted him over the phone, asking him if he wished to transfer from USC after the Trojans got hammered by the NCAA.
Those five schools are Fresno State, Washington, Oregon, and finally (gasp) Alabama and Florida.
The rule for poaching true freshmen: it is allowed, but the athletes' school must be notified of the recruitment and establish reasonable restrictions. Apparently, USC had not been notified by anyone.
USC requested the Pac-10 to notify the guilty schools of the rule. Illegal contact with a player is a minor violation.
Fresno State would do well to land a transfer from Baxter, as they just lost Ryan Mathews. Mathews is considered one of the best RB's in the nation.
Washington would be ecstatic to get Baxter. They would be able to put the next Reggie Bush, (only on the field, I hope!) in the backfield of one of the most talent starved teams in the country.
I fail to see Oregon's need for Baxter, unless they're worried Lamichael James will get arrested again.
The Alabama accusation is very puzzling. Why would the Tide take a risk to try to get another RB when they have two of the best in the country?
Florida would love to add a multi-dimensional back like Baxter to their spread offense. They would utilize him in so many ways that no defense could keep track of him.
As of right now, Florida and Oregon have denied illegal contact with Baxter. Expect the others to deny soon. Either way, someone is lying, Baxter or the five schools. This will be an interesting story to watch.
