2010 NFL Draft: Chargers, Bills Focusing on Iowa's Kyle Calloway?
B.Jan 30, 2010
Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz turns three-star recruits into NFL all-stars.
Kyle Calloway is a perfect example of that. Like fellow Hawkeye Bryan Bulaga, Calloway is another rock-solid offensive lineman with a ton of potential.
Considered a three-star recruit coming into Iowa, Calloway is now one of the top offensive tackles in this year's NFL Draft. It helps that over the last three seasons, he has started 37 regular season games.
Three years of starting experience on an offensive line coached by a former NFL line coach has many teams drooling at the chance to draft him...and willing to overlook his drunk driving arrest last summer.
Calloway was arrested after officers stopped him doing a drunken Evil Knievel on a moped through a police barricade. He was suspended for a game and ordered to complete counseling.
NFL teams looking in Calloway's direction shouldn't consider the arrest a red flag like with some players, though. It was a stupid mistake by a drunken college kid celebrating his birthday a little too hard. He has learned from his mistake and is fully focused on his potential professional career.
The 6'7'', 315-pound guard was an All Big Ten second team and has a very similar style to Marshall Yanda, a former player at Iowa drafted by the Ravens in 2007.
Recently, Calloway has been working on his technique with Tom Nutten, a former guard who played eight seasons for the St. Louis Rams. Calloway is an excellent run blocker, a skill many NFL teams are currently in need of, and Nutten is helping him prepare for the changes at the next level.
With the large number of offensive lineman in this year's draft, it is hard to say for sure where at Calloway will be selected. He is being selected in online mock drafts anywhere between the second round and the fourth round.
Regardless of where he is picked, any team would benefit from his ability.
The San Diego Chargers might be targeting an offensive tackle in the draft this year. They need to provide Philip Rivers with adequate protection, and the right side of their offensive line was a tad suspect this past season.
The Chargers would benefit greatly from a skilled and experienced tackle like Calloway. San Diego could use their No. 60 pick on the Hawkeye.
The Buffalo Bills are also a team in need of some offensive line improvement. The Bills never found an adequate replacement for Jason Peters and had one of the worst lines in the NFL this past season. They are definitely looking to improve their situation with one of their draft picks this year.
Buffalo could use the No. 72 pick overall on Calloway, who could have an immediate impact on their offense.
Other teams that could be looking in his direction are the Arizona Cardinals, the Seattle Seahawks, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The NFL draft will kick off in a few months, on Thursday, April 22.
That's when Calloway will find out if Buffalo or San Diego are truly interested in him.
