Houston vs. San Diego State: Score and Reaction for 2016 Las Vegas Bowl

Adam WellsDec 17, 2016

San Diego State rode the legs of star running back Donnel Pumphrey and an opportunistic defense to a 34-10 victory over Houston in the 2016 Las Vegas Bowl.

Houston appeared to be on cruise control early, jumping out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter, but San Diego State responded with 34 unanswered points to secure the program's second consecutive bowl win.

Pumphrey came into Saturday's game needing 108 yards to surpass former Heisman Trophy winner Ron Dayne's FBS record of 6,397 career rushing yards. The senior star took a while to get going against the Cougars before finishing with 115 yards and one touchdown on 19 carries.

The record-breaking run came on Pumphrey's first carry of the fourth quarter when he scampered 15 yards for a first down.

Joe Marino of NDT Scouting did note a technicality that used to work against Dayne, but also emphasized how efficient Pumphrey has been with his attempts:

Dayne did offer his congratulations to Pumphrey on Twitter, though he was sure to include his total rushing yards with four bowl games added in:

There are any number of ways to nitpick the past and present when it comes to records. Regardless, Pumphrey's astounding career with the Aztecs ended in glorious and historic fashion.

While Pumphrey drew most of the headlines for San Diego State in 2016, Rashaad Penny's efforts helped the Aztecs set another NCAA record during the bowl game.

Penny was able to reach the 1,000-yard barrier against Houston, though this was also his worst game of the season with 10 rushing yards on nine carries.

Houston's defense was doing an excellent job of containing the Aztecs offense early. The Cougars held a 10-6 advantage at halftime and forced San Diego State into punts on each of its first four possessions.

Unfortunately, Houston quarterback Greg Ward had one of his worst games of the season. He was picked off four times, including twice in the third quarter. His second turnover of the quarter was particularly costly.

San Diego State had the nation's most opportunistic defense in 2016, forcing 26 turnovers. The Aztecs also were very good at converting interceptions into points, per GoAztecs Stats:

Coming into the bowl game, Ward had just nine interceptions all season and one in the previous three games. He was unable to get comfortable in the pocket because San Diego State's defense had eight sacks.

It wasn't just San Diego State's pass defense's stifling Ward that caused Houston problems. The Cougars, who weren't a prolific running team anyway with just 3.6 yards per carry, were completely shut down on the ground with 41 carries for 25 yards.

This was not an offensive showcase for either team. Each had less than 260 yards of total offense, but San Diego State won the turnover margin 4-0 and converted those short-field chances into two touchdowns.

Houston came into the game in an unusual position with Major Applewhite in his first game as head coach after Tom Herman left for Texas on November 26. Even though Applewhite has served on the coaching staff since 2015, the team has only had a short amount of time to get used to a new leader.

Yet, credit San Diego State for making necessary adjustments after a slow start and using its defense to pound Houston into submission in the second half. Ward was completely out of sorts and got no help from his running game.

The Aztecs won 10 games during the regular season for a reason. They don't play in a Power Five conference, which makes it easy to overlook their accomplishments, but head coach Rocky Long has now won 22 games over the past two seasons.

Postgame Reaction

In an emotional scene after the game, Pumphrey's father got in on the celebration with his son, per ESPNU:

As for Pumphrey's thoughts about sharing the moment with his dad, the San Diego State star could only offer a simple response.

"It means the world to me," Pumphrey said, per the Associated Press (via ESPN.com).
