Michigan State Players Raise Fists During National Anthem vs. Wisconsin
Three Michigan State football players have joined the national anthem protests by raising their fists prior to Saturday's home game against Wisconsin.
According to Kyle Austin of MLive.com, fullback Delton Williams, defensive end Gabe Sherrod and safety Kenney Lyke took part in the demonstration.
Earlier in the week, Sherrod had indicated on Twitter that he would take a stand against racial discrimination:
"As long as it's done in a peaceful way, this is America," Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio said, per Matt Charboneau of the Detroit News.
On Friday night, after racist graffiti was found on Eastern Michigan's campus, students held a peaceful protest during and after the Wyoming-Eastern Michigan football game at Rynearson Stadium.
Michigan State is the latest football program with players publicly involved in the protest, which San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick started last month.
Kaepernick sat during "The Star-Spangled Banner" during the first three games of the preseason. He took a knee during the anthem in the 49ers' final preseason matchup against the San Diego Chargers and has continued to do so.
After Kaepernick started the movement to protest how people of color are treated in the United States, several of his teammates and other NFL players joined him by kneeling or raising their fists during the anthem. College football, WNBA and soccer players, including United States women's national team star Megan Rapinoe, have also joined the protest.
