AP College Football Poll 2016: Week 4 Rankings Unveiled for Top 25 Teams

Timothy RappSep 18, 2016

You can't ask much more from college football than what fans got Saturday.

There were countless matchups between the nation's top teams. There was a Heisman Trophy hopeful torching a rival. There was controversy. There were wild comebacks and even wilder finishes. There was more intrigue than one day should contain.

And the Associated Press poll looks different because of it.

We broke down the latest poll, provided Bleacher Report's rankings and analyzed the week in college football.

Analysis

It's Lamar Jackson's world, and we're all just enjoying it.

Louisville's superstar quarterback and the Heisman front-runner was brilliant once again Saturday, accounting for 362 yards from scrimmage and five total touchdowns as the Cardinals annihilated Florida State 63-20.

If there was any doubt Louisville's electrifying start to the season was for real, the Cardinals silenced their naysayers Saturday.

Louisville dominated every facet of the game, as the defense held the Seminoles to 284 yards of offense and created two turnovers. But afterward, all the talk was about Jackson. And why not?

He now has 913 passing yards, eight touchdowns and just two interceptions to go along with 464 rushing yards and another 10 touchdowns. He's been the driving force behind the Cardinals' rapid ascent in the rankings, and it's hard not to compare him to a former ACC quarterback who once lit up the league with his arm and legs: Michael Vick.

Heck, Vick made the comparison himself:

While Jackson and the Cardinals stole the show, their contest against Florida State wasn't the day's only marquee matchup.

Alabama made another strong argument that it is the nation's top team, ending a two-game losing streak against Ole Miss. It wasn't easy for the Crimson Tide, of course. Ole Miss seized a 24-3 lead with 2:47 remaining in the first half, but the nation's No. 1 team scored 45 of the next 51 points with the help of two defensive touchdowns and a special teams score.

And even after Alabama took that 48-30 lead in the fourth quarter, the Rebels quickly scored two touchdowns to make things interesting.

"It was an unbelievable game for fans to watch," Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban said, per the Associated Press (h/t ESPN.com). "It was really a difficult game for an old coach to have to suffer through. But we made it. We made it, and I'm really proud of our players."

Urban Meyer was proud of his players, too, after Ohio State looked impressive in a 45-24 victory over Oklahoma.

"This was the coming-of-age game," the Buckeyes head coach said, per the Associated Press (via ESPN.com). "I just made a comment earlier about that. I took a deep breath, and as I just watched our guys be on the buses, I thought, 'My gosh, this is a young team.' This was for a lot of them their first road experience. I'm very proud of them."

Ohio State's talent has never been in question. But a convincing win in Norman left no question the Buckeyes are a contender to win the national championship this season.

"They're no longer inexperienced," Meyer said. "We went on the road and played at Oklahoma. It has to be one of the top five hardest places to play."

Winning in South Bend, Indiana, is no easy task, either, but that didn't stop Michigan State from earning a crucial victory over Notre Dame. In Iowa City, Iowa, meanwhile, North Dakota State pulled off an upset of Iowa. And California—buoyed by a controversial call on a fumble late in the game—helped to shake up the rankings with a wild upset victory over Texas. Nebraska knocked off Oregon, too.

A few teams had close calls as well, further altering the college football landscape in a topsy-turvy week. Wisconsin narrowly escaped Georgia State, while Tennessee and Georgia were tested by Ohio and Missouri, respectively.

One thing was obvious Saturday: No team, however high its ranking, is ever safe in college football.

That should prove true again in Week 4, when a number of intriguing matchups highlight the slate. Florida faces Tennessee, Wisconsin takes on Michigan State, Georgia matches wits with Ole Miss, and Arkansas and Texas A&M square off at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
