B/R Recruiting Breakdown: 5-Star WR Donovan Peoples-Jones

Tyler DonohueSep 28, 2016

Each week, Bleacher Report National Recruiting Analyst Tyler Donohue analyzes a different prospect based on in-person evaluation and intensive film study. Here's our latest scouting report of a promising young athlete and how he projects as a college player.

Detroit standout Donovan Peoples-Jones is considered one of the country's most coveted uncommitted recruits. The 6'2", 192-pound receiver, who began collecting top-tier collegiate scholarship offers as a freshman, remains undecided about an ultimate destination one month into his senior season.

Peoples-Jones, who claims offers from nearly 30 universities, solidified his status among the 2017 recruiting class' elite athletes last summer. Then a rising junior, he earned the title of 2015 Nike Football Ratings National Champion as a rare underclassman invite at The Opening.

His ensuing campaign at Michigan powerhouse Cass Tech High School provided further proof Peoples-Jones is far more than just a workout warrior. He caught 68 passes for 1,161 yards and 18 touchdowns as a junior, according to David Goricki of the Detroit News, spearheading a run to the state's Division I state championship game.

Often pointed to as a primary concern by quarterback recruits committed to colleges across the country, Peoples-Jones has encountered endless sales pitches from passers and staffs alike throughout a lengthy process. A decision isn't anticipated until the final stages of autumn at the earliest, so campus visits and continued communication with coaches will play an important role moving forward.

Let's take a closer look at the dynamic playmaker who has commanded so much interest during a dominant high school career. B/R's Recruiting Breakdown series rolls on with a review of Peoples-Jones.

The Basics

High School: Cass Technical (Detroit)

Size: 6'2", 192 lbs

Recruitment Status: Offers include Florida, Michigan, Michigan State, Nebraska and Ohio State

Prospect Assessment

  • Peoples-Jones is one of the country's most impressive high school athletes, regardless of sport.
  • His future is football, but it's fun to watch him take on other athletic endeavors. ... Elite explosiveness translates from field to court, resulting in dunks that few prep players can produce.
  • Expansive wingspan and rare leaping ability create a catch radius far larger than his 6'2" frame may suggest.
  • His success during the 2015 Nike Football Ratings Championship shouldn't be underappreciated. ... Peoples-Jones became the first underclassman to win this star-studded event, posting monster numbers, highlighted by a 42-inch vertical jump and 4.42-second 40-yard dash.
  • There may have been an opportunity to solidify himself as the consensus No. 1 overall receiver prospect this summer at The Opening. ... Missed most of action due to hamstring issue.
  • Peoples-Jones has progressively sharpened his route-running technique.
  • At the high school level, we sometimes see receivers of this talent caliber largely ignore details and rely on sheer athleticism to beat opponents. Instead, he's become more diligent in efforts to attack downfield, displaying dedication to his craft.
  • Long strides and top-end acceleration make Peoples-Jones a threat to rack up substantial yards after the initial reception.
  • Capable of thriving on a variety of routes. ... Can take the top off a defense with straight-line speed, body up opponents in short-yardage settings or beat defenders across the middle with exceptional extension.
  • His range gives quarterbacks an opportunity to put air underneath the ball. ... Few athletes he'll encounter in college will be able to get higher for a pass, allowing Peoples-Jones to high-point and pluck the football in contentious situations.
  • Large, strong hands reel in targets with authority. ... This reliability should result in early opportunities as a freshman.
  • His run-blocking is also worth noting. ... Peoples-Jones is a willing participant in rushing efforts and locks onto a defender through the whistle.

For additional evidence of a skill set that has commanded attention from coaching staffs across college football, let's take a quick look at the tape.

We mentioned Peoples-Jones' catch radius as a major asset for any offensive attack. Simply put, it reduces the margin of error his quarterbacks face from an accuracy standpoint, and also allows passers to pinpoint particular areas (i.e., a high throw toward one corner of the end zone) with confidence that the play will result in a touchdown or a harmless out-of-bounds incompletion.

Here, he is approximately 20 yards downfield from the line of scrimmage and matched up in single coverage. This is precisely the kind of situation an offense should attempt to exploit, and the quarterback sails a high-placed pass toward the end-zone sideline:

Peoples-Jones (No. 9 in white uniform) makes a quick adjustment moving toward the football, gaining a spacial edge in the matchup. He then goes airborne to pull down a touchdown reception, showing off the vertical extension showcased during basketball forays and Nike Football testing:

Freakish physical ability aside, let's place an emphasis on Peoples-Jones' technical progression. It's a point of emphasis for every top receiver in college football, and part of the reason we believe he could produce in a pivotal role during his first fall on campus.

At the start of this particular play, Peoples-Jones is lined up wide in tight man-to-man coverage without a safety over top:

He identifies the center of the field as a point of attack, bursting toward the sideline with initial steps before accelerating inside the hash marks. By this time, the defender's head is turned, his feet are out of place and Peoples-Jones has space to do damage:

An opposing linebacker attempts to flare out in coverage across the middle, but it's too late. Cass Tech's quarterback, identifying Peoples-Jones heading toward daylight without a safety bearing down, places the ball on his top target.

He gains possession around the 50-yard line, tucking the ball in stride and racing forward for a 64-yard score:

Long-Term Outlook

Peoples-Jones presents the raw potential that tantalizes offensive coordinators, matching it with a motivation to compete and improve. This combination bodes well for further development.

Expect his physique to expand in a collegiate weight training program, packing on quality mass that will make him a greater threat to dispose defenders while picking up extra chunks of yardage after the catch. Regardless of roster depth, coaches will be hard-pressed to keep Peoples-Jones out of the game-day receiver rotation in 2017 if he sustains health.

Peoples-Jones projects as an immediate difference-maker who forces opponents to account for his whereabouts with extreme attentiveness. He can force a defense to make concessions elsewhere in coverage, creating opportunities for other offensive options.

The country's top committed quarterback prospects consistently mention him while discussing "must-get" prospects, as he could provide a potential safety net for passers throughout his career. It seems like simply a matter of time until Peoples-Jones delivers big-time performances in key moments on a national stage.
