Volunteers quarterback Joshua Dobbs made plays when it mattered most, throwing for 91 yards while running for 106 to complement five total touchdowns. He spearheaded a Tennessee offense that piled up 330 yards against the Hokies’ stingy defense.
Virginia Tech did some good things offensively. Quarterback Jerod Evans had his moments and threw for 214 yards and one touchdown. Travon McMillian ran for 127 yards on 14 carries, highlighted by a breakaway 69-yard touchdown in the first quarter.
But five costly lost fumbles from Virginia Tech were the biggest difference in the game. The Hokies were in control early, but the moment they started giving the ball away, Tennessee took full advantage.
