Amway College Football Poll 2016: Complete Week 2 Rankings Released

Tim DanielsSep 6, 2016

Alabama destroyed USC to maintain its spot atop the Amway Coaches Poll on Tuesday after a highly entertaining first week of college football. While the Crimson Tide rolled, a couple of the nation's Top Six teams suffered losses in their openers to immediately shake up the rankings.

Oklahoma and LSU, which ranked third and sixth, respectively, in the preseason poll, can't be counted out of the playoff conversation despite the early losses. The Sooners and Tigers face virtually no margin for error throughout the rest of the 2016 campaign, though.

Here's a look at how the Top 25 for the Amway Coaches Poll shapes up for Week 2:

An outsider may suggest things couldn't have gone much better for Bama in Week 1. The Tide beat a fellow marquee program by 46 points, the defense looked primed for another monster season, and the quarterback play was solid as the rushing attack did the heavy lifting.

Nick Saban is not an outsider. The 10th-year head coach didn't allow himself to celebrate the statement win to open the season. Instead, he talked about the areas where Alabama must still get better as the season moves forward, per Nick Schwartz of Fox Sports:

"

We need to improve as a team. We need to get more guys that can play winning football and create more depth on our team. More guys to contribute on special teams. We've got to build around the very good players that we have, but we've got to get more consistent execution I think from a lot of the players so we don't have negative plays, we don't have some of the things we had early on on offense.

"

Next up for the Crimson Tide is what should be a routine tune-up clash with Western Kentucky before their next key test on the road against Ole Miss on Sept. 17. If Week 1 is any indication, it's going to take a monumental effort to knock off Bama this season.

While Saban's crew is an annual playoff contender, one team looking to crash the party this season is Houston. The Cougars started the year with their most important game of all against Oklahoma and responded with a tremendous all-around team effort to earn a double-digit triumph.

Now, the schedule is extremely favorable moving forward. There are some potential pitfalls along the way, highlighted by games against Cincinnati and Louisville, but Saturday's win left the door wide open for Houston to complete a perfect regular season after already moving into the Top 10.

Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant came away impressed:

So did the NFL Network's Rich Eisen:

Although it's only early September, you can already hear the debate that will rage at season's end if Houston remains unbeaten and puts its resume up against a one-loss team from a power conference. The Cougars can't afford to look that far ahead, though.

Texas also made its presence felt in Week 1. Though the program has seemed stuck in neutral over the past couple of years, the Longhorns signaled they might finally be ready for a return to the national spotlight with a thrilling double-overtime victory over Notre Dame, sliding them into the Top 20.

The question is whether they can showcase that level of play over the course of the entire season.

ESPN Stats and Info noted Texas has actually performed well in high-profile games lately:

On the flip side, JJ Stankevitz of CSN Chicago provided a reason for optimism for Notre Dame fans, courtesy of the 2015 Oklahoma Sooners:

Looking ahead, there aren't nearly as many must-see matchups on tap for Week 2 as there were during the memorable first week. It should serve as the calm before the storm as the action really begins to heat up the following weekend.

That said, a couple of games should have an impact on the rankings, including Arkansas vs. TCU and Virginia Tech vs. Tennessee. And, as always, all it takes is one upset from out of nowhere to turn a nondescript week into a meaningful one.
