We knew this would be a good weekend of football right from the start, as Tennessee and Appalachian State provided quite a show Thursday night.
Many picked the Volunteers to win the SEC East, but they struggled mightily against the Sun Belt opponent. It took until the fourth quarter to get their first touchdown to even send the game to overtime. They were then fortunate to recover a ball in the end zone to score a touchdown in overtime.
Tennessee did survive and is officially 1-0 in the standings, just like many of the other elite teams around the nation. However, there are still major question marks about this team that caused the Vols to fall four spots in the standings despite a win.
Other struggling teams weren't quite as fortunate, such as LSU. The Tigers entered the year with a great defense and strong rushing attack behind Leonard Fournette, but this apparently isn't enough to beat a quality opponent like Wisconsin.
LSU quarterback Brandon Harris showed poor accuracy and decision-making in the loss, including an interception in the final moments to seal the team's fate.
Bleacher Report's Barrett Sallee was hard on the SEC squad when speaking with Paul Finebaum of ESPN:
If the Tigers are going to compete, we will need to see a lot more from the offense.
Oklahoma was another top team to go down, as the No. 3-ranked squad fell short against No. 15 Houston.
Brandon Wilson also provided one of the highlights of the week with this game-changing play, courtesy of ESPN College Football:
The Sooners struggled to run the ball and couldn't contain quarterback Greg Ward Jr., but the Cougars clearly aren't just a small team trying to pull off an upset. There is a lot of talent on this roster, and the team has a chance to remain undefeated throughout the year.
As Skip Bayless of Fox Sports 1 noted, the result likely says more about the winning team than the losing one:
Oklahoma should be able to bounce back from this and remain a contender in the Big 12.
The best performance in the country belonged to Alabama, which was already ranked No. 1 and was a near-unanimous top choice in Week 2 with 62 of 64 first-place votes. An expected tough battle against No. 20 USC turned into a laugher, as the Crimson Tide finished with a 52-6 victory.
Former USC head coach and current Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin was able to get a bit of revenge with the win.
Another team that had an impressive showing was Texas, who came through with a shocking upset of No. 10 Notre Dame on Sunday night. While the Longhorns have become an afterthought in the Big 12 in recent years, they produced an impressive win over the Fighting Irish in a wild game that ended 50-47 in double overtime.
The quarterback combination of Shane Buechele and Tyrone Swoopes worked perfectly to outduel Notre Dame quarterback DeShone Kizer, who also had a great performance to start the season.
Texas head coach Charlie Strong noted the mental aspect making a difference from last year, per Max Olson of ESPN.com:
After beating a talented team like Notre Dame, the Longhorns will hope they can keep the momentum going for the rest of the year after entering the rankings at No. 20 this week.
The final game of the weekend once again featured a memorable matchup, as Florida State was able to prevail against Ole Miss. The Rebels built up a 28-6 lead in the first half, but the Seminoles responded with 33 unanswered points to fuel the biggest comeback in school history.
While Deondre Francois and Florida State proved they were worthy of their high preseason ranking, Ole Miss is clearly one of the top teams as well and shouldn't drop too much.
With so much happening in one week, it's hard to imagine what to expect as an encore in Week 2.
