The Opening 2016: Top 40-Yard Dash Times from Nike Football Ratings Championship

Tyler DonohueJul 8, 2016

BEAVERTON, Ore. — The Opening annually attracts elite talent to football fields on Nike's sprawling world headquarters campus. Regardless of which college football program you support, it's easy to appreciate the sheer athleticism on display during competition between the country's premier high school prospects.

Recruits put their physical talents on full display Friday morning when more than 150 participants completed four phases of the Nike Football Ratings Championship. This combine-like testing features a 40-yard dash, agility shuttle, vertical leap and power-ball toss.

Let's place our focus on speed here, pointing to players who torched the turf during 40-yard dash efforts. Here's a look at eight who claimed the quickest times and how things are progressing in their respective recruitment processes.

7 (tied). 4-Star S Devon Hunter

1 of 8
  • 40-yard dash time: 4.42 seconds
  • School: Indian River High School (Chesapeake, Virginia)
  • Size: 6'1", 205 lbs.
  • 247Sports' composite ranking: No. 58 overall; No. 4 safety

Just two weeks after dropping a list of collegiate favorites for the public, Devon Hunter displayed an element of his skill set that's helped attract dozens of scholarship offers. Though he's capable of playing physical football in the box, coaches can count on him to provide sturdy pass coverage downfield thanks to exceptional speed.

Hunter burst onto the national recruiting scene after a sophomore season that featured 71 tackles and five pass breakups. His top options include Alabama, North Carolina, Auburn, Clemson and Virginia Tech.

7 (tied). 4-Star CB Marco Wilson

2 of 8
  • 40-yard dash time: 4.42 seconds
  • School: American Heritage School (Fort Lauderdale, Florida)
  • Size: 6'0", 175 lbs.
  • 247Sports' composite ranking: No. 217 overall; No. 25 cornerback

The Sunshine State is always filled with tremendously fast players, and Marco Wilson asserted himself as one of his home region's speediest at The Opening. He actually led the competition about midway through testing before being overtaken by other competitors later in the process.

Wilson, a secondary standout at Florida powerhouse American Heritage High School, is smooth in coverage and plays with a level of ferocity that makes him a difficult matchup for opponents. Miami, Tennessee, Florida and USC are among programs in pursuit of his pledge.

5 (tied). 5-Star RB Cam Akers

3 of 8
  • 40-yard dash time: 4.41 seconds
  • School: Clinton High School (Clinton, Mississippi)
  • Size: 5'11 ½", 212 lbs.
  • 247Sports' composite ranking: No. 12 overall; No. 2 running back

Cam Akers leads the way for running backs in this department, and he's also the heaviest prospect to appear here. The former Alabama commit cruised to a 4.41 with serious muscle mass, showing exactly why he's such a coveted talent on the 2017 recruiting trail.

Akers, who operates as a running back at Clinton High School, collected a career-high 1,418 rushing yards and 16 rushing touchdowns last season. Since backing off a pledge to the Crimson Tide in March, his group of contenders has expanded to include LSU, Georgia, Florida State, Ole Miss and Ohio State.

5 (tied). 4-Star CB Tre Brown

4 of 8
  • 40-yard dash time: 4.41 seconds
  • School: Union High School (Tulsa, Oklahoma)
  • Size: 5'11", 178 lbs.
  • 247Sports' composite ranking: No. 171 overall; No. 18 cornerback

Oklahoma is well-represented at The Opening, and Tre Brown provided a statement on behalf of the Sooners recruiting class Friday morning. The tenacious defensive back broke through for a top-five overall score and now turns his attention to seven-on-seven action on a team with eight Oklahoma commits.

Brown, who pledged to the Sooners in March, is a ball hawk who emerged as a primary concern for college coaches early in this cycle. His alternative offers include Arizona State, South Carolina, Tennessee and Oregon.

4. 4-Star WR Jeff Thomas

5 of 8
  • 40-yard dash time: 4.38 seconds
  • School: East St. Louis High School (East St. Louis, Illinois)
  • Size: 5'10", 170 lbs.
  • 247Sports' composite ranking: No. 62 overall; No. 9 wide receiver

A crowded collection of elite receivers at The Opening is predominately loaded with uncommitted recruits, including Jeff Thomas. The dynamic pass-catcher showed off a game-altering burst Friday, leading all players at his position in this drill.

Thomas, who is considered a strong candidate to land with Alabama on national signing day, racked up gaudy statistics during his first three high school seasons. Since 2013, he's tallied 127 receptions for 2,431 yards and 28 touchdowns.

Aside from the Crimson Tide, nearby Missouri is a strong contender. Thomas' offer sheet also features Florida State, Michigan State, Texas A&M and Miami.

3. 3-Star CB Donovan Johnson

6 of 8
  • 40-yard dash time: 4.35 seconds
  • School: Cass Technical High School (Detroit, Michigan)
  • Size: 5'10", 176 lbs.
  • 247Sports' composite ranking: No. 586 overall; No. 58 cornerback

Just two months ago, we witnessed Donovan Johnson claim the top 40-yard dash time during regional camp action in Columbus, Ohio. He followed that performance with an even more impressive display at The Opening.

Johnson is one of several Cass Tech standouts in attendance, though his 3-star status doesn't command quite as much attention as teammates such as 5-star receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones. He demanded the spotlight Thursday with sensational speed, which should enable him to handle an array of explosive receivers in Beaverton.

His collegiate options include Penn State, Arizona, West Virginia and Virginia Tech.

1 (tied). 4-Star ATH Salvon Ahmed

7 of 8
  • 40-yard dash time: 4.32 seconds
  • School: Juanita High School (Kirkland, Washington)
  • Size: 6'0", 185 lbs.
  • 247Sports' composite ranking: No. 156 overall; No. 6 athlete

It's already been a productive week in Beaverton for Pacific Northwest playmaker Salvon Ahmed. He dropped a top-five list Thursday afternoon and followed up that announcement with a memorable sprint in ratings competition.

Ahmed tied for the speediest dash of the day, and that's a significant achievement considering his impressive physical stature. He could play on either side of the football in college, though he worked with defensive backs later Saturday.

His 2015 season featured more than 2,000 yards of offense, nearly 30 total touchdowns and four interceptions, according to Scott Eklund of Scout.com. Ahmed narrowed his recruitment to Notre Dame, Oregon, Stanford, USC and Washington.

1 (tied). 5-Star CB Darnay Holmes

8 of 8
  • 40-yard dash time: 4.32 seconds
  • School: Calabasas High School (Calabasas, California)
  • Size: 5'10", 190 lbs.
  • 247Sports' composite ranking: No. 10 overall; No. 1 cornerback

The nation's top-rated cornerback also lands atop this list. Darnay Holmes actually registered two electrifying results during testing, following up his 4.32 40-yard dash with a 4.35 effort.

His performance probably doesn't come as a surprise to opponents who've been forced to deal with him during recent seasons. Holmes recorded 2,236 receiving yards and 25 touchdowns in 2014 and '15 combined, per MaxPreps, adding seven non-offensive scores last fall.

He remains uncommitted, while Clabasas High School teammates Tristan Gebbia and Keyshawn Johnson Jr. attempt to lure him into Nebraska's class. Other contenders include UCLA, Stanford, Ohio State and Michigan.
