B/R Recruiting Notebook: 4-Stars' Planned Commit; SEC Visits Set for 4-Star ATH

Damon SaylesMar 28, 2016

So much for Easter being time off.

Sunday may have been a holiday for some, but for Oklahoma, Kentucky and Rutgers, it was a day where their respective recruiting classes got better. Rutgers added 2-star wide receiver Bryce Watts, while Kentucky outrecruited schools like Michigan and Purdue to land a 4-star athlete who could line up at multiple positions on the field.

Oklahoma, however, may have been the biggest winner of Sunday. The Sooners capitalized on two 4-star receiver commits and not only reached double figures with their 2017 commitments but also jumped to No. 2 in 247Sports.com's composite team rankings.

New OU commits: 'We planned it'; sights set on 2018

Oklahoma received big news on Sunday when Waxahachie, Texas, 4-star wide receiver Jalen Reagor gave his verbal commitment to head coach Bob Stoops and his staff. That happened Sunday afternoon. Minutes later, the Sooners added another 4-star receiver in Cedar Hill, Texas, standout Charleston Rambo.

Reagor and Rambo became the Sooners' 10th and 11th pledges, respectively, in the 2017 class. And Oklahoma fans will be happy to know that prior to the commitments, the two receivers had been in contact.

"We planned it," said Reagor, a former Texas Tech commit. "I feel great. After the visit, it felt like home. I want to be a Sooner and leave a legacy. The coaches and atmosphere is just great, and the expectations are very high. I love it."

Rambo was very excited about his decision and is looking forward to calling Reagor a teammate at the next level. He also said he's got his eyes on one target he hopes to one day put on the crimson and cream.

"Verone McKinley is up next," Rambo said of the popular 2018 cornerback. "[He's] a smart player who knows when to jump routes and can really cover."

McKinley currently has 13 offers, including Oklahoma.

New UK recruit Richardson: Playing WR or defense?

Kentucky added a potential keystone piece to its 2017 class Sunday when Maple Heights, Ohio, 4-star prospect JaVonte Richardson. He is Kentucky's top-ranked commit thus far.

At 6'4" and 216 pounds, Richardson physically has the tools many colleges are looking for. He's a big, strong athlete who is expected to get even better with the help of college coaching.

The big question: Where does he end up? Richardson is listed as a wide receiver, but he also can excel on the defensive side of the ball. Steve Wiltfong, director of recruiting for 247Sports, said he spoke with Mark Harris, who trains Richardson at Raw Talent in the greater Cleveland area, and Harris compared Richardson to the Seattle Seahawks' Frank Clark, who started out as a wide receiver before ultimately growing into a defensive end.

"JaVonte's a kid when he flashes, you certainly notice him," Wiltfong told Bleacher Report. "He's a big, strong player who can run, but for him to be a difference-maker in the SEC, he'll need to become a little more consistent.

"He's got plenty of upside physically. I think he wants to play receiver, and I like him as a receiver prospect, but I could also see him playing linebacker or safety."

Trio of SEC visits on deck for 4-star Carper

Plain Dealing, Louisiana, 4-star athlete Keldrick Carper has 26 offers, the latest coming from Kansas on Thursday. He has additional offers from Georgia, Texas A&M, Mississippi State, Tennessee, TCU, South Carolina and several other programs.

Carper is excited about the weekend, as he's planning on taking unofficial visits to Vanderbilt, Tennessee and Georgia. While he isn't not planning on making a decision any time soon, he's looking at the trips to help trim his offer list.

"I just want to play ball where I can make the quickest impact," Carper said. "If it's receiver, I want to go where I have a solid quarterback. If it's defense, I want to play as early as possible. I just want to make sure I give everyone a chance to present their offers to me."

Carper said Kansas offered him as a wide receiver. It's one of the few offers, he said, that will have him playing on the offensive side of the ball at the college level. He said he has more offers from schools planning on him competing in the secondary, either as a free safety or a cornerback.

For Carper, a 6'3", 183-pound athlete, getting offers from both sides of the field is something he appreciates.

"The stats say receiver," said Carper, who caught 66 passes for 947 yards and 13 touchdowns and also rushed for 716 yards and seven scores. "I'll be honest, though: I felt like I got 20 times better at free safety than I was."

Notre Dame sets early bar for 4-star Adebo

After attending Notre Dame's junior day last week, Mansfield, Texas, 4-star athlete Saiid Adebo is someone who values a school's football prestige equally with its academic reputation.

In short, Notre Dame set the visit bar high.

"I really saw how impressive their atmosphere was," Adebo said of Notre Dame. "Their facilities, the way their coaches were, the way the players engaged ... when you watched it all, it was a testament to how good the school is."

Adebo, who can play wide receiver, cornerback and safety at 6'1" and 181 pounds, said he doesn't have any visits scheduled, but he's hoping to visit Duke and Baylor sometime this spring. He has 13 offers, including Oklahoma, Baylor, TCU and Oklahoma State—along with Notre Dame.

He said he's weighing all of his options and won't make any decisions prematurely. The winning program, however, must peak his interest athletically and academically.

"I want to be at a school that has one of the better educational systems in the country and not just a good team," Adebo said. "I'm looking for a best-of-both-worlds type of thing."
