Games to Watch
Fiesta Bowl: No. 8 Notre Dame vs. No. 7 Ohio State
The one thing the Ohio State Buckeyes do better than most teams is run the ball.
That's the unfortunate news for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. They haven't been good against the run this year.
When the two teams meet in Glendale, Arizona on Jan. 1, it may just be the Ezekiel Elliott show inside the University of Phoenix Stadium. After calling out the Buckeyes' coaching staff for not getting the ball enough in the loss to Michigan State, Elliott carried the ball 30 times for 214 yards and scored twice in Ohio State's 42-13 win over Michigan on Nov. 28.
Elliott not only runs for a lot of yards, but he's one of the best at running downhill and making the big play, according to ESPN Stats & Info:
Notre Dame has averaged 179.6 rushing yards against per game in the last two months, giving up 193.5 in the month of October. Seeing how Elliott has averaged 139.3 yards per game this year, the math is self-explanatory. Elliott is going to have a big game and lead Ohio State to a win in the Fiesta Bowl.
Citrus Bowl: No. 14 Michigan vs. No. 19 Florida
The Florida Gators have not been a good offensive team since quarterback Will Grier was suspended.
Florida was able to put up a solid fight against Alabama in the SEC Championship, but it only mustered 15 points against the Tide. The task of winning won't be any easier against the Michigan Wolverines in the Citrus Bowl.
Jim Harbaugh has established a defensive culture his first year at Michigan, only allowing 122 rushing yards per game. Quarterbacks don't fare any better, as opposing signal-callers are completing a lowly 48 percent of their passes against the Wolverines defense.
Defensive line coach Greg Mattison will be the defensive coordinator for Michigan in the Citrus Bowl, as D.J. Durkin accepted the head coaching position at Maryland.
"We're approaching it to win the next game and no timetable. We'll evaluate it as we go," Harbaugh said about his plans for a new DC, per Mark Snyder of the Detroit Free Press. Excited to have Greg coordinate the defense. I think we're going to do a fantastic job."
Not much should change with Mattison as the defensive coordinator, especially since he coached a talented defensive line all year. But it's going to be a battle of defenses, and right now the arrow points in Michigan's favor.
