Cal Coach Sonny Dykes Praises Jared Goff, Mentions QB Has Never Stolen Crab Legs
When NFL teams look at draft prospects, they evaluate what the player does both on the field and off it.
There aren't many concerns about Cal quarterback Jared Goff in either respect—just ask Sonny Dykes.
Dykes talked about Goff's future with Thayer Evans and Pete Thamel of Sports Illustrated. The Golden Bears head coach had plenty of glowing things to say about his quarterback, both of his ability on the field and his character. Dykes even dropped a bit of a comparison to a recent No. 1 overall pick:
"He does some stuff I've never seen anybody do before. He gets the ball out so quick. He sees things. He's got all the stuff. Physically, he's still real skinny, and when [NFL scouts] get around him, they're going to go, Am I really going to give this guy $100 million? Other than that, there's not one negative thing you can say about the guy. He's humble, he's hard-working and loves football. There's not one single skeleton in his closet. He's all the stuff that you want. He's never stolen crab legs, any kind of that stuff. You don't have to worry about all that with him.
"
"He's never stolen crab legs..." I wonder who that could be referring to? (Obviously it's Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston.)
Dykes used that little comment to try to boost his player's draft stock. Teams are becoming more and more wary of players with off-field issues. However, Winston's crab legs incident—or any of his other alleged incidents, for that matter—didn't keep the Buccaneers from taking him with the first pick in this year's NFL draft.
Goff's record is clean. And though his physical abilities should already have him high on many teams' draft boards, the Cal quarterback should be even more attractive to organizations that don't want a player with a checkered past.
