Three Up Three Down: Week 5 Edition

IconThree teams headed in the right direction after Week 5:

1. South Florida: The Bulls were number two on my "up" list last week, but after a huge upset over West Virginia, they're now number one. Matt Grothe's play at quarterback continues to impress and the Bulls' defense was able to shut down one of the most prolific offenses in the country. Jim Leavitt has got it rolling, now let's see if it continues.

2. Virginia: With a big-time win over Pittsburgh to follow an upset over Georgia Tech, the Cavaliers appear ready to live up to the annual hype. Preseason publications seemingly always state that Virginia has a chance to be good, but the 'Cavs are typically always mediocre. Who knows, maybe the decision to stay with Al Groh was a good one.

3. Florida State: The Seminoles might have found a dependable quarterback after all. I personally watched Xavier Lee this weekend in Alltell Stadium and I must say, he was impressive. His decisive throwing and quickness can prove to be lethal. He's also extremely accurate. If Lee can stay consistent, the 'Noles could be a team to watch in the second half of the season.

Three teams headed in the wrong direction after Week 5:

1. Texas: Possibly the most overrated team in the nation this year, the Longhorns have got a lot to worry about going into the Red River shootout. Colt McCoy has been plagued with accuracy problems all season. Texas barely escaped at UCF and was soundly beaten this weekend at home by Kansas State. Mack Brown needs to right the ship—now.

2. Alabama: It is regrouping time for the Crimson Tide after two straight losses. Alabama needs to find some sort of consistency on offense. It's crazy—the Tide seems able to march methodically down the field during crunch time—but when the pressure is off, the offense sputters. Major Applewhite's offensive play calling appears to abandon the run early in the game.

3. Florida: The Gators have been exposed two straight weeks. In Week 4, Florida showed a lot of weaknesses against a very weak Ole Miss team. In Week 5, the Gators were stunned at the hands of a desperate Auburn team. Florida needs to find a legitimate running threat.
