Ranking Biggest Playoff Upsets Ever 🤯
Assuming that Ohio State defeats Virginia Tech on Monday, there could be a tiny shakeup toward the top of the polls as Alabama slides past TCU for the second spot. Alabama comfortably defeated No. 20 Wisconsin, while TCU narrowly got past an unranked Minnesota team.
For some, it might be surprising if they don't move past TCU, especially with the way they played on Saturday. AL.com's John Talty took a look at the Crimson Tide's Week 1 win:
"It was a throwback Alabama performance against Wisconsin, with the rushing attack and front-seven powering the way to a 35-17 win. Derrick Henry was unstoppable at times, rushing for 147 yards and three touchdowns to provide the juice the offense needed. The defensive line lived up to expectations when it limited a typically run-heavy Wisconsin offense to 40 yards. Wisconsin averaged 320.1 rushing yards per game last season.
"
A complete team performance like that far outshines a six-point TCU victory over Minnesota.
Everything will probably remain the same until the No. 15 spot after Arizona State lost to Texas A&M. The Aggies, who were receiving votes but not ranked, could shoot into the Top 20 with such a decisive win.
They handled Arizona State nicely with a defense that frustrated what is usually a high-powered unit. According to FoxSports.com's Stewart Mandel, he has seen this A&M coming for a while now:
"Texas A&M can reach the College Football Playoff. I've been telling you guys that for a month, but now that you've actually seen the Aggies beat a preseason Top 15 team 38-17, maybe you'll believe me?
"
While Arizona State might be able to stay in the Top 25, Stanford and Wisconsin might drop out. It would be a tough break for Wisconsin, who lost to Alabama, but Standford's loss to Northwestern will most definitely see them go down.
Mississippi State might be the other unranked side to breach the Top 25 after their victory over Southern Mississippi. With a possible Heisman candidate in quarterback Dak Prescott, the Bulldogs, like Texas A&M, could be making some noise in the SEC.
After their win against Central Michigan, Oklahoma State could be on the verge of breaking through to the Top 25 if the polls are unkind to a non-Power Five school like Boise State, though they beat a Pac-12 side in Washington.
But no one actually knows what goes through the minds of those responsible of ranking college football's Top 25 teams. There shouldn't be too many changes among this week's top teams, as they mostly play weaker, out-of-conference opponents. But big movement will be coming. It happens every year, and 2015 will be no exception.
