The Opening 2015: Results, Rankings, Highlights and Reaction from Thursday

Joseph ZuckerJul 9, 2015

The next crop of college football All-Americans continued to showcase their skills at The Opening 2015 in Beaverton, Oregon. Thursday's action started off by putting some of the best linemen on both sides of the ball on display. The day concluded with the start of the seven-on-seven tournament.

The Opening has featured a number of marquee stars over the past few years, including Mike Davis, Leonard Fournette, Derrick Henry, Ezekiel Elliott and Nelson Agholor.

Of course, not every player at this year's edition will reach those heights, but you can bet that a small handful will become household names in a few years.

Linemen Challenge Workout Recap

The Opening tweeted out the top five offensive and defensive linemen during Thursday's workout:

Few players showed a more marked improvement than Greg Little, who is the No. 1 offensive tackle in 247Sports' composite rankings.

The lasting image from Little's Wednesday performance was him getting trucked by 5-star defensive tackle Rashan Gary. ESPN's Derek Tyson provided a Vine of the destruction:

The matchup went a little differently on Thursday as Little more than held his own:

Scout.com's Allen Trieu believed Little was winning nearly all of his head-to-head battles:

247Sports' Barton Simmons wrote that the Allen, Texas, native was the top offensive lineman at The Opening on Thursday.

"He's got confidence in his athleticism and pass set," Simmons argued. "He's one of the few offensive linemen that never seems overmatched against the speedier rushers but he still has the mean streak that you are looking for."

Little is committed to the Texas A&M Aggies, and you can easily see him following in the footsteps of Luke Joeckel, Jake Matthews and Cedric Ogbuehi. His speed and agility will be perfect for Kevin Sumlin's offense.

Drake Jackson, the No. 2 center on 247Sports' composite rankings, also turned heads Thursday. Jackson isn't shy about getting in a defender's face, as evidenced by this video from Bleacher Report's Sanjay Kirpalani:

According to Scout.com's Greg Biggins, Jackson got under the skin of a few different players throughout the workout:

Tyson shared another entertaining encounter between Jackson and Raekwon Davis:

On the other side of the ball, nobody shone brighter than Gary. He's the top player in the country in 247 Sports' composite rankings and illustrated exactly why Thursday. Simmons considered him the "alpha dog" of the workout portion:

"

Every time Gary takes a snap, whether it's during the run period or the pass-rush period, there's a different speed and a different intensity level on display. Brett Heggie was chirping at Gary at center and Gary proceeded to beat him twice in a row in pass rushes as a 1-technique. He was unblockable as a 3-tech too and he looks right at home rushing from the edge as well.

"

Gary is so strong that simply getting in a good position and placing your hands where they need to be aren't enough at times. ESPN's Tom VanHaaren shared a Vine of Gary overpowering Jack Anderson, a 4-star offensive guard in the 2017 class:

The Paramus, New Jersey, defensive tackle spoke about how participating at The Opening will only help to grow his game, per USA Today's Jim Halley:

"

This is going to be the best (talent) that I go against all season. These guys are the top five at their positions. They're giving me a good look and hopefully, I'm giving them a good look too. I can always get better, taking it day by day. Right now, in my mind, I have one move. But when they see the film, they're going to tell me, if they do this, you do that.

"

It's scary to think that Gary will only continue getting better before he hits college. He's the kind of defensive tackle who can stuff the run just as easily as he can get after the passer. And even his presence alone will be enough to force double-teams that in turn free up space for his teammates.

Since he has yet to commit to a school, the fight to secure his pledge will only increase after his performance at The Opening.
