Elite 11 2015: Results, Rankings, Highlights and Reaction from Tuesday

Tyler ConwayJul 7, 2015

The Elite 11 competition continued heating up Tuesday, as the nation's best and brightest prep quarterbacks continued fighting to be put on the coveted list.

Texas commit Shane Buechele came into the afternoon atop the rankings after winning the accuracy competition Monday. He was followed by Stanford commit KJ Costello and Tennessee commit Jarrett Guarantano, who each impressed with their all-around games.

However, being atop the rankings going into the day did not mean players would stay there. The second day of true competition proved vital, as the quarterbacks ran a skeleton offense against defenses. While it's not quite 11-on-11, the seven-on-seven looks give coaches a chance to see how players progress through their reads and make decisions.

Here is a look at how things shook out following Day 3 in Oregon, according to Fox Sports' Bruce Feldman:

Among the most impressive performers Tuesday was Georgia commit Jacob Eason, who is starting to live up to his billing as the top quarterback in the country. Eason is listed at 6'5" and 205 pounds, making him able to spray the ball all over the field with ease. 247Sports currently lists him as the third-best player in the country.

Bleacher Report's Michael Felder placed Eason atop his Elite 11 rankings:

Of course, we all knew Eason was an elite talent coming into this week (pun intended). What we didn't know is that he'd be using The Opening's stage as a recruiting tool for the Bulldogs.

“When you graduate early, your commitment is set in stone and you can recruit a class around you," Eason said, per Jim Halley of USA Today. "There’s a bunch of guys here that I can work on. I’m looking forward to E.J. (Price, a four-star offensive tackle from Archer High in Lawrenceville, Ga.). I know he decommitted, but we’re looking forward to getting him back on the team.”

LSU commit Feleipe Franks was also impressive, flashing a bit more arm strength to go with his solid running ability. Franks isn't likely to make a top-five list by the end of the week, but he's shown more promise than most believed he had as a passer.

“It’s great to be able to compete with the best quarterbacks,” Franks said, per Halley. “Iron sharpens iron. They’re getting better and I’m getting better at the same time.”

Another young star with a ton of physical gifts is Virginia Tech commit Brandon McIlwain, whose fluidity with the football has drawn rave reviews. Bleacher Report's Damon Sayles offered a video of the Newton, Pennsylvania, product finishing off a drive:

While most of the discussion involved shuffling near the top of the rankings, the stalwarts were far from irrelevant. Buechele has been sensational all week, likely to the point he'll be moving up the national radar. Listed at 6'2" and 185 pounds, per 247Sports, it's easy to get a Colt McCoy vibe with the way he accurately puts the ball wherever he wants. It's also been promising that he's continuing to show the arm strength to get it there as well.

B/R's Tyler Donohue thought he did enough to affirm that No. 1 ranking:

Costello and Guarantano each remain real contenders near the top of the rankings, which should make the coaching staffs at Stanford and Tennessee happy.

Overall, there haven't really been too many disappointing performances. Even the ones that are less stellar than expected are overshadowed by players outperforming the preconceived notions. If this group of young signal-callers continues trending in this direction, it'll be awfully fun to see how many of them are instant impact players at the college level.
