USC's home opener didn't go as expected. The Trojans mustered just a single touchdown against Washington State in an upset loss, and fans were not at all pleased with head coach Lane Kiffin. Their stance was no mystery.

Bill Plaschke of the Los Angeles Times detailed the chants that rained down on the fourth-year head man:

They are two words that echoed through the bowels of the Coliseum late Saturday night, two words chanted by thousands of voices, two words illustrating how a loyal and sunny crowd have been drenched in anger and hopelessness.

"Fire ... Kiffin."

Via Plaschke, Kiffin dismissed the chants and accompanying boos, saying, "You can’t worry about that, it is what it is. I think I heard those before the game started, in warmups, I’m getting used to it."

The vocal displeasure with Kiffin shows how far he's fallen since being viewed as somebody to guide the program through a rough patch and back toward the top. Instead, he's losing the support of the fanbase early in the new campaign.

USC entered Saturday night's game as a double-digit favorite but received virtually no production through the air. The quarterback duo of Cody Kessler and Max Wittek combined for just 54 yards and two interceptions.

There was concern that relying on two quarterbacks would eventually haunt the Trojans, but it happened sooner than anticipated. As a result, Washington State emerged from the Coliseum with a win despite strong showings from USC running back Tre Madden and the Trojans defense.

The loss leaves USC at 1-1 with far more difficult games on the horizon. It will have to show signs of progress quickly for Kiffin to keep his job.

Although the Trojans have talent, likely enough to finish inside the Top 25, the results simply haven't been there. They finished a lackluster 7-6 last season, and the outlook for this season took a hit with Saturday night's loss.

What the future holds for Kiffin is unknown, but some fans made their opinions clear on Saturday night.
