Clearly by the title of this article, you as a reader must already know that this writer doesn't approve of how the Florida State Seminoles won the ACC and are now BCS bowl-bound. The evidence is still on the field, because the 'Noles clearly stayed in the locker room for the second half.
This game is a crystal clear reminder that Florida State isn't ready for dominance again, and everything points back to the head coach.
How is it possible for a loaded Florida State team to go into halftime with a 21-6 lead and then come out completely cold for another 30 minutes of play. Did Georgia Tech have some kind of magic potion in the locker room that they drank during the break? Was the game rigged?
It just doesn't make any sense! Florida State is still loaded with 5-star talent, Georgia Tech is not.
EJ Manuel is a fifth-year senior that actually lasted for an entire season, and he's clearly not even close to reaching his full potential. Then we have the running game. The duo of Devonta Freeman and James Wilder Jr. could be just as good as the running back duo that Alabama has with Eddie Lacy and T.J. Yeldon, and yes, that could be a biased statement.
This offense has at least five receivers that can take over a game, but apparently nobody has given them the memo.
Kelvin Benjamin is a Calvin Johnson-type player in the making, so why isn't he putting up massive numbers and becoming a household name? Rashad Greene was a star freshman last year; was this a sophomore slump or did he just disappear in this offense?
Does anybody remember Christian Green? I seem to remember him having some outstanding games last season as a freshman. The only time he's been seen this season is when they zoom in on Coach Fisher on the sidelines and Green usually has a towel wrapped around his neck and most likely wondering we he isn't playing.
In case you haven't caught onto this yet, this is a giant rant by a very concerned fan!
So let's get to the good stuff. Florida State's defense is nothing short of spectacular. Bjoern Werner is the best defensive end in the country, and quite frankly, Tank Carradine and Brandon Jenkins would be the second and third best had they not been set back by injuries.
Christian Jones and Telvin Smith are emerging superstars at their prospective linebacker positions. Xavier Rhodes is one of the best defensive backs in the country, and Ronald Darby has a very bright future ahead of him. Karlos Williams is a work in progress, and the safety combination of Lamarcus Joyner and Terrance Brooks is arguably the best safety combo in the country.
This defense lived up to its hype, but it was the offense that set the defense up for failure.
For example, the ACC Championship. This game should have had the outcome displaying a blowout. Instead, this was a game that Florida State probably should have lost. Manuel chipped in an interception along with a horrific fumble, and Benjamin added to the party by supplying his own terrible fumble.
At one point in the game it seemed like Florida State was trying to lose.
The only reason Georgia Tech was able to put up 15 points was because Florida State's offense didn't execute and forced this great defense to work much harder than it should have. This game seemed like Florida State versus North Carolina State part two. Every Florida State fan was waiting for this to be another lost game.
So, finally to the point at hand. There's a reason why this season was another lost season. It's our leadership at the coaching position, it's the talent that never lives up to its full potential and it's the execution.
Back in Bobby Bowden's day, he would sign up to play against top talent in the country because he would never let off the gas, and he would put a team to rest in the third quarter by pouring on the offense and crushing the opposition with defense. He didn't let a team survive long enough to squeak out a victory.
That's what is wrong with this team. Whether or not Fisher wants to admit it, he can't be the sole play-caller. He needs to hire someone who will take over the responsibility and get the very most out of the talent on this offense.
These players also need to realize that when they put on that helmet, that golden helmet with the Seminole spear, that means something! It's a sign of greatness that needs to come back. It's a sign that demands excellence and won't stand for mediocre play. That uniform symbolizes a history of winning, not a history of winning in embarrassing fashion.
It's time for this team to rise up again and to finally finish a season, proving to everyone that they belong at the top and they aren't just another overrated Florida State team.
