Jerry Sandusky Trial: Sandusky Could Face More Charges Despite Guilty Verdict

On Friday night, former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky was found guilty on 45 of the 48 child sexual abuse charges against him. Sandusky is likely to spend the remainder of his life in prison, but with two new accusers coming forward, there is a possibility that further charges will be coming his way, according to David Wenner of The Patriot-News.

Sandusky's 33-year-old adopted son, Matt, claimed through his attorney on Thursday that the elder Sandusky had indeed sexually abused him despite the fact that Matt had repeatedly insisted that he hadn't throughout the entire process. Also, 30-year-old Travis Weaver came forward on NBC's Rock Center Thursday and accused Sandusky of abusing him, according to Wenner.

Former prosecutor and Pennsylvania attorney general Walter Cohen told Wenner that he didn't believe prosecutors would bother with the new charges unless Sandusky and his legal team appeal the guilty verdict against him.

Appealing is an option for Sandusky, and it is expected that his attorney, Joe Amendola, will request a new trial. If judge John Cleland denies Amendola's request, he can appeal to the Pennsylvania Superior Court and finally the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.

In an effort to curtail Sandusky and his team from doing so, however, prosecutors could very easily bring charges against Sandusky stemming from the allegations of Matt Sandusky and Weaver, according to Wenner. That would put Sandusky's legal team in the position of not only having to win a possible retrial, but having to win an entirely new trial as well.
