Ohio State Football: Buckeyes' 1-Year Postseason Ban Is Blessing in Disguise
Urban Meyer and the Ohio State Buckeyes won't be competing for BCS Championship in 2012. Even if they weren't banned from postseason play, they still wouldn't be playing for the title next year.
Coach Meyer's vaunted offensive scheme is not picked up overnight. His success with Alex Smith and Tim Tebow took some time. The quarterbacks, as Meyer himself noted, were not without elite playmakers either (via the Ozone.com):
""One thing that Tim Tebow, Cam Newton and even Alex Smith had in common is the guys around them were really dynamic playmakers,” said Meyer, who coached all three of them.
"My biggest area (of concern) is the playmakers. Where are they or do we have them," Meyer asked himself during his radio appearance.
"
Buckeyes quarterback Braxton Miller is going to be a sophomore in 2012. He finished the 2011 season with 1,159 yards passing, 13 touchdowns and four interceptions on 54.1-percent passing while rushing for 715 yards and seven touchdowns.
Miller, at 6'3", 210 pounds, has the athleticism, arm and overall potential to be an elite quarterback. If Meyer doesn't believe Ohio State currently has the playmakers it needs, they do have the luxury of one other thing: time.
But Miller will have time to develop in Meyer's offense and Meyer will have time to add to his program and roster.
This postseason ban, although damaging, gives the Buckeyes something they didn't expect: time.
By the time the Buckeyes are ready to compete for Big Ten and BCS Championships again in 2013, they'll have had plenty of time to get things together.
