Fantasy Football Week 2: The Ultimate Guide to Sunday's Action

Eric MackSep 13, 2014

It hasn't taken long for the NFL's and fantasy football's battle of attrition to set in. We lost the Baltimore Ravens' Ray Rice (suspension/release) for the season, will be losing Minnesota Vikings' Adrian Peterson for at least one week (more on that in a later slide) and have to weigh the shaky status of Chicago Bears wide receivers Brandon Marshall (ankle) and Alshon Jeffery (hamstring) for a Sunday night game.

You have to hate when your top fantasy wideouts are questionable going into a Sunday night game, particularly against one of the NFL's better defensive teams. It makes them very difficult to trust...and replace.

It is the nature of the fantasy beast. We have to listen to the reports, analyze and adjust on a weekly basis. This one just seems more difficult than most.

We get you caught up on all the latest hubbub in Bleacher Report's Ultimate Guide to Sunday's Action. You get an update on B/R's Top 100 rankings—with an addition of Peterson replacement Matt Asiata in there—can dive into the NFL Injury Report in full depth and are provided with starts, sits, sleepers, busts and late-minute waiver-wire options.

Overall Rankings

1 of 6

Ordinarily, Matt Asiata wouldn't move the needle in fantasy football. Right now he is the talk of it.

Adrian Peterson was deactivated for Sunday's game against the New England Patriots amid his indictment on a charge of reckless or negligent injury to a child in North Montgomery County, Texas, as Master Tesfatsion of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported. Peterson's absence could be an extended one, especially after the Ray Rice suspension scandal, as Tesfatsion also reported, "It's likely the league or the team will take action Monday."

Asiata will be the starting running back with rookie Jerick McKinnon the backup against the Patriots, a team that gave up a league-high 193 yards rushing to backs in Week 1, per FFToday.com. Clearly, our belief that the Pats fixed their run-defense issues from a year ago was off base.

Asiata moves from nondescript handcuff to a a potential starter in Week 2 and beyond. His ownership in CBSSports.com leagues has risen 38 percent in less than 24 hours to 41 percent. If Peterson suffers Rice's fate, Asiata should be owned in more than 75 percent of leagues. Consider him and McKinnon (19 percent owned) as must-add options for running back-needy fantasy teams immediately.

We moved Asiata into B/R's updated Top 100 players for Week 2 at No. 82, which is one spot higher than Rice's supposed Baltimore Ravens replacement, Justin Forsett, was before Thursday night's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Forsett disappointed and Bernard Pierce starred, but we have a feeling Asiata is going to come through with 80 yards and a touchdown.

Injury Report

2 of 6

Jay Cutler has notoriously been a week-to-week injury risk. This time, it's his wide receiversAlshon Jeffery (hamstring) and Brandon Marshall (ankle)we have to be worried about in fantasy.

Marshall did not practice all week, while Jeffery just returned on a limited basis Friday. Both were listed as questionable for Sunday night's game at the San Francisco 49ers, according to the official NFL injury report.

Cutler and the Bears are prepared to change the offense with his two big targets out, as they had to in practice this week. Cutler discussed the change with Mark Potash of the Chicago Sun-Times.

"

It's different. It's definitely different, not having those guys out there. We've still got Marty [tight end Martellus Bennett] and Matt [Forte] in the backfield, so we've just got to figure out what we like with some of these other guys and just make sure that we keep our plan simple and get in and out of the huddle.

"

We expect Jeffery to play at least in a limited capacity, but the uncertainty might lead you to find fantasy replacements for both star receivers, particularly since we won't have good information at most lineup deadlines around 1 p.m. before that game later Sunday night. If you need an emergency option for one or both, consider Santonio Holmes, who is the only healthy veteran receiver on the roster right now.

We break down the rest of the fantasy-pertinent names with regard to their status for Week 2 below.

Note: All practice participation information comes from the official NFL injury report provided by NFLmedia.com (credentials required).

Probables

Quarterbacks

  • Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys (back): He should be much better in Week 2, particularly if the Tennessee Titans show as much spunk as many expect. Every Romo game could wind up looking like a college basketball score.
  • Cam Newton, Carolina Panthers (rib): He was a full participant in Friday's practice, so expect him to play. After his deactivation in Week 1, you're advised to keep an alternative handy, though.
  • Carson Palmer, Arizona Cardinals (shoulder): Bruce Arians told AZCentral.com's Kent Somers he "thinks" Palmer will play. After what the Detroit Lions' Matthew Stafford did to the New York Giants defense, you have to hope he will be active for fantasy purposes.

Running Backs

  • Reggie Bush, Detroit Lions (knee): He was a full participant Friday, so keep him active as needed.
  • Eddie Lacy, Green Bay Packers (concussion): He whipped through the NFL's concussion protocol and is probable, but the matchup against the New York Jets makes him a sit.
  • Andre Ellington, Arizona Cardinals (foot): He played through it Monday night, so we should expect him to be active, even if he isn't 100 percent.

Wide Receivers

  • Keenan Allen, San Diego Chargers (ribs): He is going to play, but the matchup against the Seattle Seahawks is not a favorable one. The injury might be the clincher on sitting him.
  • A.J. Green, Cincinnati Bengals (foot): You should have no reservations starting him.
  • Andre Johnson, Houston Texans (ankle): He will play, but expect him to be on this list frequently this season.
  • Mike Wallace, Miami Dolphins (hamstring): He was limited in practice all week, but he is listed as probable, so you can start him in fantasy.
  • Roddy White, Atlanta Falcons (knee): He is another old receiver you should expect to be limited in practice but active on Sundays.
  • Terrance Williams, Dallas Cowboys (back): He was a full participant all week. He is fine to play.
  • Dwayne Bowe, Kansas City Chiefs (quad): He will be active off suspension. You likely can live without him for one more week, though.
  • Sammy Watkins, Buffalo Bills (ribs): He has practiced and will play through it.
  • Kenny Stills, New Orleans Saints (quad): He made it up to probable this week, but you likely won't need him until the bye weeks.

Tight Ends

  • Rob Gronkowski, New England Patriots (knee): You saw all you needed to see last week to keep him active in all leagues.
  • Antonio Gates, San Diego Chargers (hamstring): This isn't enough to keep him out or consider Ladarius Green a starting option...yet. You shouldn't like either against the Seahawks, though.

Game-Time Decisions

TE Jordan Cameron, Cleveland Browns (shoulder)

The Akron Beacon Journal's Nate Ulrich tweeted head coach Mike Pettine "still has hope" Cameron will play. Cameron didn't practice all week, though, and he was a bust in Week 1 due to the injury. It is enough to consider your alternatives this week.

RB Doug Martin, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (knee)

Here is one player on the right side of questionable. Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reported Martin is expected to be back in the lineup Sunday against the St. Louis Rams. Martin is still a key cog to the Bucs' chances, so consider him a solid start despite the tender knee.

RB DeAngelo Williams, Carolina Panthers (thigh)

ESPN's Ed Werder tweeted he doesn't expect Williams to play Sunday against the Detroit Lions. That might be enough to consider Jonathan Stewart a flex play in deeper leagues. Williams is beyond the age of breakdown (31), so you have to expect him to need plays (if not weeks like this) off.

Justin Hunter, Tennessee Titans (knee)

He is probable and that is a great matchup against the Cowboys, but this issue might be enough to sit him in fantasy. Hunter has potential, particularly as a 6'4" target in the red zone, but potential doesn't win you fantasy games. Production does. Hunter isn't in the class of receiver you should play at something less than 100 percent...yet.

Cecil Shorts, Jacksonville Jaguars (hamstring)

He is listed as doubtful and not expected to play. That is news enough to consider undrafted rookie Allen Hurns a solid fantasy starter again, this time at the Washington Redskins. The Redskins did not play well in the secondary against the Houston Texans and sketchy quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. Consider Shorts merely a bye-week stashee at this point because of the injury.

Find Replacements

  • RB Adrian Peterson, Minnesota Vikings (deactivated)
  • TE Jordan Reed, Washington Redskins (hamstring)
  • RB Maurice Jones-Drew, Oakland Raiders (hand)
  • RB Ben Tate, Cleveland Browns (knee)
  • RB Christine Michael, Seattle Seahawks (hamstring)
  • TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (ankle)

Start 'Em

3 of 6

We have already analyzed the matchups thoroughly in Bleacher Report's Week 2 Predictions, but the public always wants an insider's take on the fringe options who can be starters in fantasy because of a favorable matchup. Here, we present a start at each position:

QB Jake Locker, Tennessee Titans (vs. Dallas Cowboys)

If you don't trust Jay Cutler's wide receivers to play (see the Injury Report slide) or Carson Palmer (shoulder) to come through against the New York Giants, Locker might be your waiver-wire play. Locker is owned in only 50 percent of CBSSports.com's leagues. Facing the woeful Cowboys defense at home is a nice play to roll the dice for a 300-yard, three-touchdown breakthrough.

RB Carlos Hyde, San Francisco 49ers (vs. Chicago Bears)

The Bears are banged up, as we wrote previously, but we shouldn't expect anyone to get in the 49ers' way as they open their new home. Hyde is going to get scraps behind Frank Gore, but there should be plenty of them against a Bears defense that was pitiful against the run (dead last) in 2013.

The Bears didn't look that much better last week, performing in the bottom 10 against fantasy running backs in the 2014 season opener, per FFToday.com. Hyde will be good for 50 yards and at least one touchdown this week.

WR Jeremy Maclin and Riley Cooper, Philadelphia Eagles (at Indianapolis Colts)

As we chronicled in B/R's Week 2 Big Board, we fully expect the Eagles-Colts game to go bonkers for offense, points and fantasy production. Some might have jumped off the Cooper train, but we should all jump back on it for this one. This has the makings of a game that could go into the 60s in total points. Maclin and Cooper are solid options because of that.

TE Martellus Bennett, Chicago Bears (at San Francisco 49ers)

You might not like Bennett's matchup against the 49ers, who allowed the fourth-fewest fantasy points to tight ends in Week 1, per FFToday.com, but the shaky status of Brandon Marshall (ankle) and Alshon Jeffery (hamstring) probably made Bennett the most frequently targeted player in Bears practices this week. Cutler and Bennett should be heavily involved with each other in the game plan this week. Consider Bennett a solid start for those reasons.

D/ST Tampa Bay Buccaneers (vs. St. Louis Rams)

When you are weighing your fantasy defense/special teams streaming options, always look to the bottom-feeding opposing quarterbacks. No one is buying into Austin Davis or Shaun Hill (thigh) with the Rams, so we should fully expect a productive week out of a talented Bucs defense. Lovie Smith is going to make that a consistently productive fantasy option this season, even if that unit was a subtle disappointment in Week 1.

Sit 'Em

4 of 6

We have to admit, one week's worth of data is not sufficient data to draw start-sit conclusions in fantasy leagues. That doesn't mean we cannot put a viable sit list together. We just will rely more on injury information.

Here are our sits by position, mostly due to injury concerns.

QB Jay Cutler, Chicago Bears (at San Francisco 49ers)

As we have harped on in previous slides, Cutler is in for a tough week because of the shaky health of his leading receivers, Alshon Jeffery (hamstring) and Brandon Marshall (ankle). You have to further hate his prospects because of the matchup, too.

The 49ers limited Dez Bryant to a mere four catches for 55 yards last week. Santonio Holmes and company, if those stars don't play, just won't do enough for Cutler to start him in a standard league.

RB Eddie Lacy, Green Bay Packers (vs. New York Jets)

Lacy left Week 1 at the Seattle Seahawks due to a concussion, which puts him in serious risk for another one in the near future. Lacy is a head-down type of pile-mover, so keeping his head out of harm's way is fairly difficult.

Topping off the reasons we are concerned about him this week, the Jets allowed the fewest points to fantasy running backs in Week 1, per FFToday.com. Stopping the run is still one thing that banged up Rex Ryan defense will do right. Neither Lacy nor James Starks are great plays this week.

WR Michael Crabtree, San Francisco 49ers (vs. Chicago Bears)

We figured this would be a big rebound year for Crabtree, but he was merely a big bust in Week 1 due to a calf issue. Crabtree was a full participant in practice this week, but his performance out of the gate makes him someone to keep reserved until he proves healthy and productive. It might be a bit of a wait on him.

Don't start him, even if the Bears secondary is raw. The unit allowed the fourth-fewest points in fantasy to wide receivers last week, according to FFToday.com.

TE Antonio Gates, San Diego Chargers (vs. Seattle Seahawks)

Gates wasn't overly impacted by third-year man Ladarius Green in Week 1, but Gates is dealing with a hamstring issue that limited him in practice earlier this week, as mentioned in the Injury Report slide. You don't need reasons to sit anyone against the Seahawks secondary, but a short week (they played Monday night) and the injury are more than enough to consider alternatives.

D/ST New York Jets (at Green Bay Packers)

What a difference a week and a matchup makes. Week 1 was a good time to ride Rex Ryan's Jets against the Oakland Raiders and rookie quarterback Derek Carr making his first NFL start. Now, the Jets are a must-sit option as they travel to Green Bay to take on Aaron Rodgers coming off a loss and with a few extra days to prepare (the Packers played the opening Thursday night game).

The Jets might stop Eddie Lacy (concussion) and the run, but they won't stop the Packers from gushing points.

Sleepers and Busts

5 of 6

We always expect the waiver wire to reveal some early surprises in fantasy football. It happens every year.

We might not have anticipated actually having to use these guys right away. The news has been unkind to some of our fantasy staples, so weighing Week 2 matchups is far more important than you think.

We present some deep sleepers to consider for fantasy lineups and five to be wary of, even if you have to keep them active in all leagues:

Five Week 2 Lineup Sleepers

  1. QB Brian Hoyer, Cleveland Browns: No, Josh Gordon (suspension) is not coming back—yet—but the Browns are facing the New Orleans Saints at home. Drew Brees and company will play well coming off a loss, perhaps so well the Browns get a lot of garbage-time numbers. The Browns and Hoyer are no Atlanta Falcons and Matt Ryan, but the Saints surrendered the most points to fantasy quarterbacks in Week 1, per FFToday.com. Use Hoyer for the potential of 250 yards and a couple of touchdowns if you need a stopgap.
  2. RB Matt Asiata, Minnesota Vikings: You might not like him as a talent, but you have to love his opportunity in Week 2 with Adrian Peterson out. That New England Patriots run defense looked awful last week, ranking just 29th in the NFL.
  3. WR Allen Hurns, Jacksonville Jaguars: The most-added wide receiver in fantasy football this week is a nice start against the Washington Redskins pass defense, particularly with Cecil Shorts still out.
  4. TE Dwayne Allen, Indianapolis Colts: Andrew Luck and company should have a field day Monday night against a Philadelphia Eagles defense that made undrafted rookie Hurns look like an NFL superstar.
  5. D/ST Houston Texans: When in doubt, stream defenses against the Oakland Raiders this season, particularly with Maurice Jones-Drew (hand surgery) unlikely to be active Sunday.

Five Week 2 Lineup Busts

  • QB Matt Ryan, Atlanta Falcons: Coming off his great start against the Saints, you won't be sitting Ryan in any fantasy leagues. He should find things far tougher against the Cincinnati Bengals defense on the road, though. The Bengals can limit Ryan to pedestrian numbers on the level of 250 yards and a couple of touchdowns.
  • RB Zac Stacy, St. Louis Rams: Their loss of Sam Bradford (knee) for the season appears as though it might have crimped Stacy's fantasy prospects. Stacy was held to just 43 yards rushing in Week 1, and now he travels to Tampa Bay to face a far more talented Buccaneers defensive front. Stacy's owners might be in for a long season.
  • WR Keenan Allen, San Diego Chargers: This has been a rough start for last year's surprising rookie wide receiver breakout. First, he had to face a strong Arizona Cardinals secondary and now he has to face the toughest secondary in the Seattle Seahawks. Allen is going to get his numbers eventually, but you have to lower expectations in the short term.
  • TE Vernon Davis, San Francisco 49ers: This might be more of a function of the Buffalo Bills than the Chicago Bears defense, but the Bears didn't allow a signal reception to a tight end last week, according to FFToday.com. We wouldn't be surprised if Davis has one of those three-catches-for-40-yards nights.
  • D/ST Cincinnati Bengals: This might seem like we are playing both sides here, but as much as Ryan might disappoint against the Bengals defense, the Cincy D/ST can still disappoint against a potentially electric Falcons offense. The matchup isn't enough to sit the Bengals here, but you can consider alternatives if you have one on your bench.

Last-Minute Waiver Options

6 of 6

You know things are headed south in a hurry when we have to resort to recommending Chicago Bears wide receiver Santonio Holmes as a potential last-minute fill-in for fantasy lineups. That is what two game-time decisions—Brandon Marshall (ankle) and Alshon Jeffery (hamstring)—for Sunday night's game at the San Francisco 49ers will do.

Here are Saturday's popular names in CBSSports.com's roster trends and most-viewed players:

  • RB Jonathan Stewart, Carolina Panthers (vs. Detroit Lions): You can get back here by buying low on a back that might emerge as a 1,000-yard, 10-touchdown threat again. DeAngelo Williams is 31 and banged up. Stewart might be good for 80 yards and a touchdown this week.
  • RB Matt Asiata, Minnesota Vikings (vs. New England Patriots): Claim him immediately, just in case Adrian Peterson gets a serious shakedown by the NFL amid the Ray Rice controversy. It is possible Peterson is headed for an extended leave of absence, if not a suspension. The NFL has a big black eye right now, so it cannot afford another one.
  • WR Santonio Holmes, Chicago Bears (at San Francisco 49ers): Even if Marshall and Jeffery are active, they will be playing at something significantly less than 100 percent. It is rare we can say Holmes is a team's lone healthy veteran receiving option, but that is exactly what he is right now for the Bears.
  • RB Jerick McKinnon, Minnesota Vikings (vs. New England Patriots): The rookie is your Asiata consolation prize. He might have some juice later in the year, particularly during the bye weeks.
  • WR Josh Gordon, Cleveland Browns (vs. New Orleans Saints): He won't play in Week 2, or anytime soon, but Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports Gordon will have his suspension reduced from one year to 10 games, pending the approval of the NFL's new drug policy. You have to own him for potential fantasy playoff rewards.
  • RB Isaiah Crowell, Cleveland Browns (vs. New Orleans Saints): Rookie Terrance West will start in place of the injured Ben Tate (knee), but Crowell is coming off a two-touchdown performance and is a talent worth stashing for the bye weeks if you don't trust him against the Saints.
  • RB Shonn Greene, Tennessee Titans (vs. Dallas Cowboys): Lost in all this NFL news is the fact that Greene has held off rookie Bishop Sankey as the Titans' feature back and is facing that awful Cowboys defense. Greene is a plodder, but he is capable of 80 yards and at least one touchdown this week.
